POSITION SUMMARY

Perform ultrasound procedures to assist in the diagnosis of medical conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.  
  2. Completion of a specialized training program in Ultrasonic Technology or on-the-job training with a registered sonographer preferred.

Experience:

  1. One year of experience performing ultrasound procedures in a hospital, clinic or physician’s office preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.  
  2. Knowledge of physician office procedures, ICD-9 and CPT coding guidelines.  
  3. Knowledge of ultrasound equipment and procedures, protocols and safety hazards common to administering ultrasounds including equipment, body mechanics and patient movement.  
  4. Ability to recognize normal and pathological features.  
  5. Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively and to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.  
  6. Ability to identify and troubleshoot equipment problems and perform simple adjustments.  
  7. Skill in the production and communication of sonograms.

License/Certification/Registration:

  1. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification required upon hire/transfer.
    1. Registered in OB/GYN with RDMS within 1 year of hire/transfer.
  2. Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.

Receives general supervision from the Practice Manager.

Responsibilities



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Obtains essential information from patients, medical records and previous scans for correlation.
  2. Performs ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positioning patient, selecting the appropriate scan images to be recorded and obtaining diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient.
  3. Prepares the diagnostic ultrasound imagery report, saves the hard image and a copy of the report in the patient’s chart and submit the report to the appropriate physician.  
  4. Assists physicians with ultrasound guided procedures such as amniocentesis and saline infusion sonograms.
  5. Ensures all procedures are conducted following established sterilization techniques and procedures.
  6. Maintains and orders ultrasound supplies as necessary.
  7. Documents patient information, test and examination results and care provided in the patient’s paper or electronic health record.
  8. Using the Electronic Health Record, documents and bills for services rendered.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
