POSITION SUMMARY
Perform ultrasound procedures to assist in the diagnosis of medical conditions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a specialized training program in Ultrasonic Technology or on-the-job training with a registered sonographer preferred.
Experience:
- One year of experience performing ultrasound procedures in a hospital, clinic or physician’s office preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of physician office procedures, ICD-9 and CPT coding guidelines.
- Knowledge of ultrasound equipment and procedures, protocols and safety hazards common to administering ultrasounds including equipment, body mechanics and patient movement.
- Ability to recognize normal and pathological features.
- Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively and to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot equipment problems and perform simple adjustments.
- Skill in the production and communication of sonograms.
License/Certification/Registration:
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification required upon hire/transfer.
- Registered in OB/GYN with RDMS within 1 year of hire/transfer.
- Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.

Receives general supervision from the Practice Manager.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Obtains essential information from patients, medical records and previous scans for correlation.
- Performs ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positioning patient, selecting the appropriate scan images to be recorded and obtaining diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient.
- Prepares the diagnostic ultrasound imagery report, saves the hard image and a copy of the report in the patient’s chart and submit the report to the appropriate physician.
- Assists physicians with ultrasound guided procedures such as amniocentesis and saline infusion sonograms.
- Ensures all procedures are conducted following established sterilization techniques and procedures.
- Maintains and orders ultrasound supplies as necessary.
- Documents patient information, test and examination results and care provided in the patient’s paper or electronic health record.
- Using the Electronic Health Record, documents and bills for services rendered.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
