Undergraduate Research Assistant - Otolaryngology

Department Overview:

Our lab conducts translational research as part of the Department of Otolaryngology. As a translational research group, we study the effects of Alzheimer's Disease, chemoradiation, stroke, and Down syndrome on speech and swallowing in rat and mouse models to better inform clinical practice. The specific study to which the applicant is assigned will determined based on the needs of the lab.

Schedule:

Saturdays and Sundays roughly from 10am to 4pm
AND
one 4-hour weekday shift per week (between 9am and 5pm)

Qualifications:

Be enrolled as a UW-Madison undergraduate student. Classroom/work experience in biology is preferred but we will train on all lab protocols.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

We are looking for someone with the ability to work independently after training, a consistent schedule, and an attention to detail. As our lab has many moving parts, we are looking for candidates who are consistently reliable and actively maintain scientific integrity.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Daily Duties:
1. Handling rats/mice and putting them through several behavioral tasks.
2. Analyze data from behavioral tests.
3. During various parts of the year, there may be opportunities to learn and perform wet lab procedures such as cryosectioning, fluorescent staining, western blot, etc.
4. Perform routine lab chores, such as dishes, sanitization of surfaces, sweeping, etc.

Physical Demands:

Minimal lifting required (less than 15 pounds).
