Full-Time Nights

Join the Labor & Delivery team at Riley Hospital for Children, part of Indiana University Health, and play a vital role in supporting exceptional patient care. As a Unit Secretary, you will serve as a central point of communication for patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and ancillary departments while ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of the unit.

Schedule

  • Full-Time, Night Shift
  • 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Every 4th Weekend and holiday rotations required

Job Summary

The Unit Secretary ensures accurate and timely communication among patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and support departments. This role is responsible for coordinating clerical and administrative functions within the Labor & Delivery unit, maintaining patient records, scheduling tests and procedures, supporting patient flow, and providing exceptional customer service to patients and visitors. The Unit Secretary helps create a welcoming and organized environment while supporting the clinical team in delivering high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary receptionist for the Labor & Delivery unit.
  • Greet patients, families, and visitors in a professional and compassionate manner.
  • Answer and direct incoming phone calls promptly and accurately.
  • Coordinate communication between physicians, nursing staff, and ancillary departments.
  • Schedule and track patient tests, procedures, and appointments as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records and documentation.
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Ensure compliance with unit policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Provide clerical and administrative support to the patient care team.
  • Identify and communicate operational concerns or needs to unit leadership.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred

  • Completion of Medical Assistant, Medical Secretary, or related healthcare training.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • One to three years of clerical, administrative, or customer service experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
