Lilly’s Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is involved in key activities for the advancement of active pharmaceutical ingredients from pre-clinical phases through commercialization of drug substances and drug products for small molecules, synthetic oligonucleotides and peptides. Our scientists develop key technical and business solutions across the portfolio using their deep technical expertise to speed up testing of the clinical hypothesis and overall drug development. SMDD takes on this diversity of responsibilities by recognizing that an even greater diversity of talents and cultures is vital to deliver the next generation of life changing medicines to patients!

SMDD is seeking outstanding candidates to work within the process design and development team. The position presents an opportunity to work side by side with chemists, analytical chemists, formulation scientists and modelers to develop new technical solutions to accelerate our portfolio. The position will be based in Indianapolis where research is conducted in a new, state of the art development facility.

Candidates must demonstrate a history of strong technical depth, scientific leadership and a willingness to promote a collaborative, team-based approach to problem solving. The responsibilities for this role include:

  • Design and execute experiments to improve fundamental understanding of pharmaceutical formulations and unit operations
  • Build a diverse, multi-functional network through collaboration both within Lilly and with external partners
  • Engage in a highly collaborative work environment across and beyond SMDD and Lilly, including external academic researchers and pre-competitive collaborations.
  • Promote diverse thought and experience to deliver innovative solutions that address unmet technical needs.
  • Publish and present original research externally and author internal technical documents.
  • Keep abreast of relevant scientific literature/new technologies/capabilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a PhD or master’s program with a concentration in chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry or pharmaceutical sciences.  

Additional Skills and Preferences:

  • Strong analytical skills for integrating and interpreting complex data sets
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Oral solid dosage form research experience
  • Must be able to work productively in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • A firm understanding of pharmaceutical unit operations relevant to tablet production
  • Knowledge of solid-state characterization tools and techniques
  • Good interpersonal skills and a sustained tendency for collaboration.
  • Self-directed and highly motivated individual who wants to learn new techniques while continually pursuing research and publication goals.
  • Excellent communicator (oral and written) with presentation experience, along with a strong publication record.
  • Strong commitment to research in a team environment.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$58,000 - $123,200

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
