Job Summary: The Waste Packaging Verifier will play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity and compliance of all waste packages generated during the UCOR Beta 4 deactivation and demolition project. This position involves meticulous inspection and verification of waste contents and packaging against established waste acceptance criteria (WAC), project procedures, and regulatory requirements. The Waste Packaging Verifier will provide critical quality assurance to the waste management process, preventing the inclusion of anomalous or prohibited items and ensuring that waste is safely prepared for transportation and disposal.
Responsibilities:
- Perform independent verification and inspection of waste packages, including waste forms, contents, packaging materials, and labeling, to ensure compliance with approved waste profiles, Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), and project-specific procedures.
- Verify that waste does not include anomalous or prohibited items.
- Review and verify waste documentation, including manifests, labels, and packaging records, for accuracy and completeness.
- Conduct visual inspections of waste containers for integrity, damage, and proper closure.
- Ensure that containers are properly configured (e.g., liners, absorbents, gasket).
- Collaborate with Waste Packaging Specialists and other project personnel to address and resolve any discrepancies or non-conformances identified during the verification process.
- Document all verification activities, findings, and corrective actions in accordance with UCOR procedures.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, promoting a strong safety culture at all times.
- Assist in training and providing oversight to less experienced waste personnel regarding verification processes, if designated.
- Stay current with relevant DOE orders, environmental regulations (e.g., RCRA), and industry best practices for waste management and packaging.
Required Qualifications:
- Option 1: Associate's degree plus two (2) years of relevant experience in waste handling, waste management, package handling, quality control, or a similar industrial field.
- Option 2: Six (6) years of relevant experience in waste handling, waste management, package handling, quality control, or a similar industrial field without a degree.
- Demonstrated understanding of waste characterization, segregation, packaging, and labeling requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to inspections and documentation.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply complex procedures and regulatory guidelines.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting findings and collaborating with team members.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an industrial environment.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with DOE waste management programs and facilities.
- Familiarity with waste acceptance criteria for disposal facilities relevant to the Oak Ridge Reservation.
- Knowledge of non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques for waste package verification.
