Essential Function 1: Support academic success by working with students individually or in groups to improve academic knowledge and writing skills:
- Assist students with subject-related coursework in small groups or individually, or refer students to peer tutors as appropriate.
- Create a comfortable, friendly and culturally sensitive atmosphere in the Writing Center.
- Provide tutoring via email, Zoom, and/or Moodle to students at other CMI locations.
- Organize workshops for students based on skills in high demand for tutoring and/or faculty requests.
Essential Function 2: Support Students’ Use of Technology:
- Assist students with the current printing system (e-print kiosk).
- Provide support for computer related issues (desktop, mouse, keyboard etc.).
- Assist students in using MS Office, Google Drive, email, and other basic applications.
- Assist students with online registration and FAFSA as needed.
Essential Function 3: Maintain the Writing Center Environment:
- With the help of the Information Technology Department, maintain working computers and component parts (submit e-tickets).
- Ensure best practices for digital security are practiced in the Writing Center.
- Monitor use of supplies (toner, paper, etc.).
- Report abuse of center resources to the Associate Dean of Learning Support.
- Submit reports of needed repairs to the Physical Plant Department.
- Ensure the center is always clean, neat and orderly.
- Ensure proper use of the Writing Center equipment and address any malfunction to the appropriate department (IT or Physical Plant).
Essential Function 4: Participate in Assessment of the Academic Support Program:
- Maintain the Writing Center database for the Academic Support Program.
- File reports with Associate Dean of Learning Support.
- Collect customer feedback on Writing Center use and effectiveness.
- Assist the Associate Dean of Learning Support with program review and outcome-based assessment.
Essential Function 5: Train and Supervise Student Workers:
- Develop and provide trainings, workshops, and review sessions for Writing Center tutors and monitors as directed.
- Develop subject-related materials to use in tutorials and tutor training.
- Organize orientation meeting workshop for student workers at the beginning of every semester.
- Meet monthly with student workers.
- Resolve conflicts among student workers as necessary.
- Monitor student worker activities and hours.
- Mentor tutors to ensure best practices are being utilized, including helping them develop skills, activities, and materials to use in tutorials
Essential Function 6: Administrative:
- Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified student employees to serve as tutors and monitors in the Writing Center.
- Coordinate with the Associate Dean of Learning Support and Human Resources Office on student worker contracts and timesheets.
- Schedule and mediate tutor coverage if shifts are swapped or if a tutor is absent..
- Evaluate student workers.
- Co-lead in Academic Support Program meetings, workshops and activities.
- Coordinate with the Associate Dean of Learning Support in communicating to students, faculty, and staff about the services provided in the Writing Center
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- AA/AS Degree from an accredited college
- Two years of experience working in a learning center
Desired Qualifications and Experience
- BA/BS in subject or related area
- Five years of experience working in learning centers
- Experience with MS Office, Google Drive, email, and other basic applications
