New grad hardware roles
Entry-level hardware engineers design circuits, write RTL, develop embedded firmware, or work on PCB layout and testing. You might join Apple's chip team, work on radar systems at a defense contractor, or build IoT devices at a startup. Titles include Hardware Engineer, Embedded Software Engineer, ASIC Design Engineer, FPGA Engineer, and Electrical Engineer.
Landing a hardware job out of school
Hardware hiring values hands-on experience. Senior design projects, personal builds, and lab work stand out on a resume. Know your fundamentals: circuit analysis, signal processing, digital logic, and at least one HDL (Verilog or VHDL). For embedded roles, be comfortable with C and understand interrupts, DMA, and real-time constraints. Hardware roles are less plentiful than software ones, so apply widely and consider companies outside pure tech.
