New grad quant roles
New grad quant positions span quantitative trading, quantitative research, and quantitative development (quant dev). Traders execute strategies and manage risk. Researchers build and refine mathematical models. Quant devs write the infrastructure that makes it all run. Firms like Jane Street, Citadel, Two Sigma, DE Shaw, HRT, and Jump Trading are the biggest hirers, but prop shops and hedge funds of all sizes have these roles.
Breaking into quant as a new grad
The interview process is intense: expect multiple rounds of math, probability, brainteasers, and coding. For trading roles, practice mental math and market-making games. For research, be ready to discuss a thesis or research project in depth. For quant dev, it's closer to a SWE interview with a finance twist. These firms pay extremely well, but competition is steep. Apply to 10+ firms, not just the top three.
