AWS runs a free developer community called Builder Center, and it pays verified students to use it. No credit card, no purchase and no catch beyond proving you're actually enrolled somewhere. Here's what the program gives you, how the verification step works and what each badge tier is worth. Everything below comes from AWS's own page, checked on September 23, 2026.

What Builder Center gives every visitor

Anyone can sign up with an email and get three things for free: curated student learning with hands-on labs and AWS Workshops, a place to publish articles and build a public builder reputation, and topic-focused community spaces to ask questions and meet other developers. None of that requires verification. Verification is what unlocks the paid rewards on top.
What verified students get

- Profile reward1 year of Skill Builder
- 7 badges$10 AWS credits
- 21 badges$100 certification voucher
Complete your Builder Center profile after verifying and AWS unlocks a full year of Skill Builder: access to 900+ courses, hands-on labs, certification exam prep and game-based learning. That's the immediate reward for finishing your profile.
Everything after that scales with badges, which you earn by staying active on the platform. AWS's page lists three tiers: 7 badges gets you $10 in AWS credits, 14 badges gets you $20, and 21 badges gets you a $100 AWS Certification voucher, enough to cover most individual certification exams outright.
How to verify: three steps, five minutes

Verification runs through a third-party service, SheerID, not AWS directly. Sign in with your Builder ID, then give SheerID your name, your college's name and your school email address. AWS says most verifications complete within minutes; if SheerID needs additional documentation, expect it to take 24 to 48 hours instead.
Once you're verified, the second step is finishing your Builder Center profile: a photo and an about section. That alone is what unlocks the Skill Builder subscription. The third step, earning badges, is ongoing: publish articles, comment, and keep activity streaks going to climb the credit tiers.
Start verification on Builder Center or read AWS's own student FAQ first.
Is it worth doing?
If you're already a student with a school email address, yes. The whole thing costs five minutes and no money. Worst case, SheerID can't verify you automatically and you wait a day or two for manual review. Best case, you walk away with a year of Skill Builder and a path to real AWS credits and a certification voucher just for staying active in a community you might use anyway.
If you're also part of a Student Builder Group at your school, or want to start one, AWS's Builder Center page has a separate section for that: student-led communities that meet to explore cloud technology and build projects together.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a credit card to join AWS Builder Center?
No. Builder Center's own page says free workshops, free courses and the community are open with no credit card required. A credit card is not part of the student verification step either.
How does AWS verify I'm a student?
Through a third-party service called SheerID. You sign in with your Builder ID, then give SheerID your name, college name and school email address. AWS says most verifications finish within minutes; if SheerID needs extra documentation it can take 24-48 hours.
What do verified students actually get?
AWS's page lists a Skill Builder Annual Subscription (900+ courses, hands-on labs, certification exam prep and game-based learning) for completing your profile, plus badge-tiered AWS credits: 7 badges for $10 in AWS credits, 14 badges for $20, and 21 badges for a $100 AWS Certification voucher.
How do I earn the badges?
By staying active on Builder Center after you verify: publishing articles, commenting, and keeping activity streaks going. AWS's own badges page explains what each action is worth.
