About this role

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections provides public safety and corrections services through the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center. The Accountant 1 or 2 maintains accounting records and financial transactions for inmate organizations, the imprest fund, and other agency funds, and prepares financial statements and deposits.

What you'll do:

  • Utilizes Quickbooks accounting system to maintain the accounts for the EHCC inmate organizations and imprest fund. This includes cash receipts making daily deposits cash disbursements journal, issuing checks, verifies invoices and purchases journal
  • Prepares and approves quarterly financial statements for the inmate canteen operation, including a balance sheet and profit and loss statements, to present clearly the financial position of the inmate canteen and make recommendations to management as to cost containment, pricing adjustments, or other information useful in the management of the inmate canteen
  • Accounting of all agency funds such as the inmate organization fund and other funds approved but the department for EHCC by utilizing several pc-based accounting systems selected and supported by the department
  • Prepares the general fund deposits of all self-generated funds received by EHCC and maintains complete filed documenting all deposits. After deposits are prepared and verified by the Accountant 3, transactions are entered into LaGov for classification by incumbent

What they're looking for:

  • Three years of experience in accounting, auditing, financial operations, payroll, or banking; OR
  • Six years of full-time experience in any field plus twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR
  • A bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, or statistics; OR
  • An advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, quantitative methods, or statistics; OR
  • Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field
  • The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field
