About this role
ECMC Group is a nonprofit corporation focused on helping students succeed through financial tools, services, and innovative programs. The Accountant is responsible for day-to-day accounting operations, month-end close, financial reporting, investment accounting, tax and audit support, variance analysis, and continuous improvement of accounting processes and controls.
What you'll do:
- Performs month end close activities with increasing ownership for assigned areas, including preparing and posting journal entries, maintaining schedules, reconciling intercompany activity, and completing financial statement tie outs
- Prepares and maintains complex general ledger activity including balance sheet account reconciliations; research variances, resolve reconciling items, and document conclusions
- Processes routine accounting transactions and maintain accounting estimates to ensure appropriate coding, documentation, and adherence to internal controls
- Provides and maintains documentation with respect to account variances, roll forwards, supporting schedules, financial statement ratios, cash flows, explanations, and other key accounting schedules, ensuring workpapers are accurate, well-supported, and audit ready
- Performs investment accounting and reporting activities with increasing ownership, including accounting for structured finance products, capital activity tracking, waterfall support, and compilation/analysis of valuation inputs and disclosures
- Supports recurring and ad hoc FP&A activities, including planning templates, variance support, and compiling inputs for forecast and budget cycles
- Assists external audit and tax compliance activities by preparing schedules, compiling supporting documentation, and responding to auditor and advisor inquiries with accurate, timely, and comprehensive information
- Serves as the primary owner for assigned accounting processes and accounts, coordinating cross-functional inputs, managing deliverables and deadlines, proactively resolving issues, and driving continuous improvements to process efficiency, internal controls, and reporting quality
- Owns accounting areas end-to-end, serving as the primary point of contact to coordinate inputs, manage deadlines and deliverables, resolve issues proactively, and identify opportunities to improve process efficiency and control design
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
What they're looking for:
- • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- • 1+ years of progressive accounting, auditing, or financial reporting experience
- • Foundational knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting concepts
- • Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including advanced Excel skills such as pivot tables, lookups, formulas, and data analysis techniques
- • Bachelor's degree in accounting
- • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or active pursuit of CPA certification
- • Public accounting experience
- • Experience supporting month-end close, audits, tax reporting, or financial statement preparation
- • Experience in financial services, banking, investment management, structured finance, or nonprofit organizations
- • Familiarity with Workday Financial Management or other enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems
- • Experience working in a complex, multi-entity or multi-company environment
