Job Description:

The Accounting and Payroll Intern will support the DHHS Finance team by assisting with payroll processing, accounting operations, and internal data organization projects. This internship provides students with hands-on experience in public sector financial operations, including payroll administration, accounts payable/receivable processes, and financial record management.
In addition to supporting daily accounting and payroll functions, the intern may assist with a data management project focused on organizing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and improving internal document management systems. This internship is designed to provide practical experience while helping DHHS strengthen operational efficiency within the finance team.

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska

Schedule: Full-time (Monday–Friday) during the summer semester


 

Key Responsibilities:

Payroll Support

  • Assist with payroll processing tasks under the guidance of payroll staff
  • Support reconciliation and calculation of payroll records
  • Help review timesheets and payroll documentation for accuracy
  • Assist with managing payroll responsibilities for a smaller service area to gain hands-on experience

Accounting Support

  • Assist with accounts payable or accounts receivable processes
  • Support financial record maintenance and reconciliation activities
  • Help review financial documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with procedures
  • Provide support for routine accounting tasks and financial reporting

Data Management Project

  • Assist with organizing and maintaining finance team Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Support efforts to improve internal document organization within shared drives
  • Help review and categorize existing documentation to improve accessibility and efficiency


 

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field

  • Interest in payroll, accounting operations, or financial management

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with numerical data

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and stay organized in a fast-paced environment

  • Self-starter who can work independently while also collaborating with a team

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Willingness to learn and contribute to team projects
