Acting Assistant Professor, History

The Department of History at the University of Washington invites applications for an acting assistant professor, specializing in the Ancient Mediterranean World, with an anticipated start date of December 2026, or a mutually agreeable date. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching in a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time, 100% FTE, basis for a nine-month, 1-year, renewable appointment beginning December 2026. 
The base salary range for this position will be $8,667 - $8,889 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. 
The successful candidate will be expected to offer courses in Greek and Roman history or fold this material into courses envisioned in other frameworks.  Courses that branch into adjacent fields are also welcome if they are fundamentally historical in design. We especially welcome proposals for courses that could contribute to one or more of the thematic concentrations in the department’s undergraduate curriculum: Empire and Colonialism; Religion and Society; Race, Gender, and Power; and War and Society.

Applicants for this instructional faculty position must meet the following minimum qualifications:

• Demonstrate a strong record of research and training related to the Ancient Mediterranean World, including appropriate linguistic and methodological training and classroom experience.
• The candidate must have a Ph.D. in History, Classics, or a related field, or foreign equivalent, in hand by the start date.
