THE POSITION
High school students who want real world experience can step into the role of Administrative Design Intern with the Department of Transportation. This paid internship helps you learn practical skills that support safe and efficient travel across the region. You will work with technology and communication tools that keep roads clear and information flowing. It is a chance to grow your abilities while contributing to a meaningful public mission.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This internship gives you experience with communication tools, roadway information systems, and safety practices that support regional transportation operations. As a Administrative Design Intern, you will perform the following duties:
- Monitor Roadway Conditions: Review camera feeds, radios, scanners, and detection devices to assess traffic and weather changes
- Share Incident Information: Determine the area affected by events and activate messages that guide travelers
- Track Communications: Record calls and verify that all communication devices and systems operate correctly
- Support Public Contacts: Handle incoming calls and radio messages by documenting and routing information
- Maintain Operations Records: Log weather, road conditions, and communications using designated software
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- High school internship for the 2026-2027 school year. Internship will run from September 2026 through June 2027
- Work schedule will vary based on the agreement between the high school and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COPA) location.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
- You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2026 - 2027 school year.
Additional Requirements:
- Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school’s co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school’s requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
- By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth’s Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
- Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
