About this role

About the Department

The AFC Senior Systems Technician-103 will assist in the maintenance and repair of all automated fare collection devices and subcomponents and maintain or troubleshoot all power or network problems in the Bus and Subway system.

Position Duties

  • Troubleshoot and correct AFC equipment defects in a safe and efficient manner as directed by open AFC work orders in Service Now or by AFC management staff.
  • Manage the component repair to AFC equipment at the workbench level.
  • Perform workbench maintenance on all automated fare collection equipment and components.
  • Ensure maintenance, diagnostic and repair work on all AFC equipment and components.
  • Assist the AFC Systems Technicians on an as needed basis.
  • Repair defective electronic and electromechanical equipment modules, subassemblies, and microprocessor based printed circuit boards through replacement of parts and components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair defective electrical boards in workbench facility equipment or power panel boards, circuit breakers, receptacles and/or associated equipment.
  • Utilize various testing equipment to conduct diagnostic and functional tests on devices and electrical or network systems connections.
  • Perform inspections and tests on equipment to determine operating performance.
  • Repair and service all subcomponents of devices.
  • Troubleshoot network communications and dataflow to help assess local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) problems in stations and facilities.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical failures in modules, components of microprocessor-based equipment, and electrical systems in the field and workbench.
  • Use AFC proprietary software (CCS/FareGo Data) to research and correct issues.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance procedures to all fare collection equipment, power panel boards, circuit breakers or associated equipment as required or directed.
  • Complete and maintain accurate and timely preventive and corrective maintenance records on Service Now module utilizing company issued tablet.
  • Perform repair and maintenance on equipment in a cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Respond to company issued cell phone calls, e-mails, and associated messages in a timely manner.
  • Work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Respond to emergencies twenty-four (24) hours, seven (7) days per week.
  • Drive a company vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned

  • No direct reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of electronic and electromechanical equipment and components.
  • Ability to comprehend, communicate and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. 
  • Successful applicant must have English language skills required for the effective performance of the position.
  • Hold a current full-time AFC classification covered by the Local 103 contract.
  • Valid Massachusetts Journeyman Electrical license.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Able to lift 70 lbs.
  • Effective organizational and analytical skills.

  • Electrical training from a technical institute or related technical certificate from an accredited institution.
