Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Taxation is seeking an Aircraft Tax Auditor to help ensure fairness, accuracy, and transparency in how aircraft are taxed and assessed across the Commonwealth of Virginia. We’re looking for a detail‑oriented professional who enjoys investigative work, clear communication, and collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders in the aviation and tax communities.
What You’ll Do
• Audit aircraft purchases, leases, transfers, and operations to determine correct sales and use tax
• Review financial records, contracts, flight logs, maintenance documentation, and exemption claims
• Identify tax issues, prepare clear audit reports, and guide taxpayers on compliance.
• Determine aircraft value using established valuation methods and maintain accurate assessment records
• Verify aircraft identification, condition, and use; support appeals and provide expert insight when needed
• Monitor tax collections, reconcile discrepancies, and coordinate enforcement for delinquent accounts
• Respond to taxpayer and industry inquiries, provide technical assistance, and help refine processes and systems
What You Bring
• Knowledge of sales and use tax laws, auditing practices, and aircraft ownership/operation
• Strong analytical skills and comfort reviewing financial and technical documentation.
• Clear, confident communication—both written and verbal
• Sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to explain complex rules in plain language
• Ability to work independently while partnering with legal, compliance, and aviation teams
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and commitment to strict confidentiality
• Reliable high‑speed internet if working remotely
This is a home-based position.
This position is home-based, but travel may be required to the taxpayer’s location and may include occasional overnight stays. Work-related travel expenses are covered by Virginia Tax.
The anticipated hiring range is up to $67,000 commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications
• Clear knowledge, skill, ability and/or work experience in the areas of accounting, finance, business administration, aviation management, public administration, or other relevant fields
• Clear knowledge, skill, ability and/or work experience in auditing, compliance, tax administration, or financial analysis
• Ability to safeguard confidential information, including in remote work environments
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing using correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar in a concise and clear style
• Possess High-speed Internet connection (preferably not Satellite) is REQUIRED with a Download speed of 2 MB or higher and an Upload speed of 1 MB or higher
• Experience using a Windows-based computer and Microsoft Office Suite and proficiency in Word and Excel
Additional Considerations
• Experience in aviation operations, aircraft management, or aircraft financing
• Government auditing or tax assessment experience
• Relevant professional certifications and education such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
• Familiarity with state aircraft registration systems and sales/use tax platforms
