About this role

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Data Analyst to join its newsroom data team. The role produces reports, dashboards, and analyses for editorial, audience, and product decisions, while using SQL, AI tools, and automation to improve analytical workflows and supporting experiments and data quality initiatives.

What you'll do:

  • Write SQL to answer questions from newsroom editorial, audience, and product partners, translating requests into clean, well-scoped queries and clearly communicated results
  • Build and maintain dashboards and recurring reports that expand self-serve access to newsroom data
  • Support deep-dive analyses on major news events, high-priority moments, and shifts in performance
  • Help keep the reporting stack reliable by troubleshooting data quality issues, tracing problems back to their source, and partnering with data engineering to resolve them
  • Contribute to A/B tests and experiment analysis in partnership with senior analysts, growing into independent experiment ownership over time
  • Learn the newsroom's taxonomies, instrumentation, and foundational datasets, and help maintain shared documentation and analytical patterns the team pulls from

What they're looking for:

  • 1 to 2 years in data analytics, business intelligence, or a related field, or an equivalent internship and project background
  • Proficient SQL skills, with experience writing queries against non-trivial datasets
  • Comfort with a modern BI or dashboarding tool (Looker, Tableau, Mode, or similar)
  • Curiosity and speed in picking up new technical concepts and frameworks, and a track record of getting productive on unfamiliar stacks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to explain data clearly to non-technical partners
  • Care for accuracy and detail in work the newsroom will act on
  • Experience with large-scale data warehouses like BigQuery or Snowflake, or with dbt
  • Familiarity with Python for analysis, data wrangling, or automation, and comfort maintaining code in Git
  • Exposure to A/B testing and applied statistics
  • A background or strong interest in journalism, media, or content, and enthusiasm for driving journalistic outcomes
  • Comfort using AI/LLM tooling to speed up analytical workflows

Benefits:

  • Health benefits
  • Retirement benefits
  • Wellbeing benefits
  • Optional benefits
