Job Description and Duties
Are you an experienced claims professional who is passionate about paying what is owed and defending what isn’t, and doing so with a great sense of urgency? Can you work in an environment that demands flexibility, adaptability and quick decision making across diverse claim scenarios?
If yes, then State Fund’s Bakersfield team/ Insured HUB G, Coverage team is looking for an inquisitive, dynamic and innovative Assistant Claims Manager (ACM) to join our leadership team.
The ACM will oversee a team of Claims adjusters in the Coverage unit who are responsible for covering caseloads for State Fund adjusters that are on leave, vacation, etc and facilitating great customer experiences through expert claim handling. Additionally, the ACM will be responsible for:
- Strategic and dynamic Coaching for success of direct reports to ensure success and employee engagement
- Recruit hire train develop appraise and discipline staff
- Frequent use of data and management reports to uncover areas where guidance may be needed
- Manage (plan, organize, direct and control) a unit responsible for proactively adjusting, finalizing, and controlling a case assignment and/or a specialized assignment
- Management oversight of claim inventory to ensure timely and accurate case documentation, reserves, and payments to protect the organization's and/or state agency’s fiscal integrity
- Achieving team administrative excellence
- Managing and coordinating special projects as assigned
- Contributing to the objectives of the claims program
This position can be filled in the following locations: Bakersfield, Eureka, Fresno, Glendale, Oxnard, Pasadena, Pleasanton, Redding, Rohnert Park, Sacramento, Salinas, San Diego, San Francisco, Vacaville, or Stockton.
To be successful in this role the candidate should demonstrate the following desirable qualifications:
- At least five years of recent California workers compensation claims adjusting experience
- Have excellent communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to analyze management reports and data to inform decision-making
- Proven track record of successfully working independently
- Demonstrated ability to ensure timely and accurate liability decisions and benefit provisions
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and execute on strategies without explicit instruction

Special Requirements
Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract.
