Assistant Coach - Strength and Conditioning

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) Department of Athletics is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Coach - Strength and Conditioning. Seawolf Athletics is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), and competes in multiple National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) divisions. The Seawolf program features 13 teams competing at both the Division I and Division II levels.

As an Assistant Coach, you will assist with developing and implementing strength and conditioning programs designed to enhance student-athlete performance, health, and safety. This position will coach and supervise student-athletes, support performance testing and recovery efforts, collaborate with sports medicine staff, and help maintain a safe and effective training environment.

To thrive in this position, an individual working as an Assistant Coach at UAA needs to enjoy the intercollegiate athletics environment; have a passion to serve student-athletes for their health, safety and wellness. It is also important to understand the part they play in coaching and guiding the student-athletes in academics and competition. This balance takes strong convictions and the ability to build positive relationships with student-athletes, trainers, coaches and staff. In addition, this individual needs to possess the ability to establish a personal work-life rhythm that provides healthy boundaries, between work and personal life.

To be successful in this role, an individual will need to have interpersonal skills that include diplomacy and a communication style that displays a high emotional intelligence to work with colleagues professionally. The individual needs to have the skills to counsel and motivate the young men and women who are student-athletes in the program. They must have the ability to assist with the organization and leadership of various tasks and aspects of the program.

The individual will need knowledge of collegiate strength and conditioning principles, safe training practices, and proper weight-training techniques. They must be able to effectively coach, motivate, and safely supervise student-athletes while supporting their overall development and well-being. Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills are essential. The individual must also work collaboratively with coaches, athletic trainers, sports medicine personnel, and administrators. Sound judgment, professionalism, confidentiality, and high ethical standards are required. Knowledge of NCAA regulations and experience with strength and conditioning technology and software are also important.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in related field and two years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

NSCA (National Strength & Conditioning Association), CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) and/or CSCCa-SCCC (Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association-Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified) certification.

Additional Requirements:

AED, CPR and First Aid certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date and/or before having contact/meeting with student-athletes, whichever date is sooner.

NCAA coaches certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date, or prior to any off-campus contact/evaluation of prospective student-athletes, or observation of countable athletically related activities (CARA), whichever date is sooner.

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) certification, or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date.

UA Safe Title IX certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date.

Applicant must possess an unrestricted Alaska driver's license or be able to obtain an unrestricted Alaska driver's license within 90 days of accepting the job. In addition, the applicant must meet the University's safe driving criteria.

Position Details:

This position is located on the UAA campus in Anchorage.  This is a part-time, term, 9-month, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 77, based on education and experience.
