About this role

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Rochester invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in probability, broadly construed. We seek outstanding early-career candidates with a PhD in pure or applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field by the beginning of the appointment, and a record of excellence in research and teaching. This appointment will strengthen the department’s research in probability and support interdisciplinary collaborations aligned with the University’s Boundless Possibility strategic plan.

We welcome candidates working across all areas of probability, with particular interest in applications and connections with other areas of mathematics, applied and theoretical sciences, and engineering.

We especially encourage applications from candidates whose research connects with areas of current University strengths and planned growth. Opportunities include interactions with physics through statistical mechanics, complex systems, and random networks; biology through mathematical evolutionary genetics and stochastic models of biological systems; brain and cognitive sciences through probabilistic models of neural activity, learning, and cognition; computer science and data science through the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning; and economics, political science, and business through stochastic modeling, game theory, and decision making under uncertainty. These examples are not exhaustive.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong independent research program, contribute actively to the department’s research community, and pursue productive collaborations within the department and across the University.

We also seek an enthusiastic teacher and mentor who will contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs, support students from a broad range of disciplines, and advance the University’s educational mission.

The University of Rochester is a private, R1 research university located in upstate New York. The mathematics department has a tradition of strength in both research and teaching. Current research areas include mathematical physics, ergodic theory, probability, algebra and number theory, analysis, combinatorics, geometry, and topology. The department has a strong undergraduate program, offering BS and BA degrees in mathematics (both with research honors options), a BS in applied mathematics, and a joint BS degree in mathematics and statistics. There are also certificate programs in operations research and actuarial studies.

Rochester is located on Lake Ontario and close to the Finger Lakes region, providing excellent living and recreational opportunities spanning all four seasons. The university is home to the world-famous Eastman School of Music and the Memorial Art Gallery, contributing to a community with a rich arts, music, and entertainment culture.

Questions concerning this position can be addressed to Prof. Doug Ravenel, chair of the search committee, or Prof. Maria Gordina, chair of the Department of Mathematics.
