The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation’s Ignacio Ponseti Orthopedic Biology Lab (POBL, located on the Oakdale Research Campus in Coralville) is looking for a Research Scientist. This opportunity will be supervised by the lab director, Dr. Mitch Coleman, but the person hired for the job will be expected to be able to independently pursue a variety of research-related objectives. The position is fully funded for 5 years and we anticipate a high level of stability in this position. POBL is located at the Oakdale Research Campus, providing easy access to our close collaborators in the Research Campus as well as Medical Center North Liberty.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

Train students and new staff on all tissue culture, histological, biochemical, and other techniques, SOPs, and basic science concepts predominant within the lab (redox/mitochondria/orthopedic basics). Assist with mentoring these individuals in the basics of laboratory work while creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

Collaborate with external labs or other colleagues to apply redox-centric techniques like glutathione assays, immunospintrapping, and monochlorobimane fluorescence in new and novel settings, for example cow synovium or intact rabbit bone. Identify developmental opportunities where our lab might benefit from incorporating a new technique.

Execute preclinical experimentation studying large animal osteoarthritis development, including animal surgery, histological analyses of arthritis, biochemical assessments of redox stress, and immunohistochemical evaluation of redox and mitochondrial outcomes during disease.

Pursue independent hypotheses and disseminate the knowledge gained by composing and publishing high impact factor papers as a first author. Similarly, compose abstracts to conferences to further disseminate cutting edge science from our lab. Give presentations at national and international conferences.

Pursue small-scale funding to support unique initiatives and your own career development.

Education

PhD in redox biology or related disciplines.

Experience Requirements

5-10 years of experience conducting orthopedic or redox-centric research.

Substantial knowledge of redox and mitochondrial biology as well as orthopedic physiology.

Exceptional attention to detail and numerical accuracy.

Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively with staff and other students.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.

Ability to learn, perform, and develop complex lab procedures.

Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment

Desired Qualifications

Previous laboratory experience.

Experience with MS Office.

Experience with power tools.

Application Process: In order to be considered, applicants must upload resume or CV (under submission relevant materials) that clearly address how they meet the listed required and desired qualifications of this position.

Job openings are posted for a minimum of 7 calendar days and may be removed from posting and filled any time after the original posting period has ended. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification.  Up to 5 professional references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment process.
