About this role
Description
Amazon's OneMHS Material Handling Equipment team is seeking a Hardware Development Engineer to support the design, development, and validation of next-generation material handling systems across our global distribution network. You will work on tasks within larger projects, owning specific components or sub-systems and work alongside senior engineers to develop and integrate hardware solutions. You will work both internally and in collaboration with third-party OEM partners and contribute to projects from concept through production and site support.
This role requires a balance of technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently on tasks given to you by more senior engineers. You will work at the intersection of R&D, product development, and operations, and join our team in challenging the status quo of traditional conveyance, sortation, and robotics solutions.
Key job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
-Support the design and development of automation hardware for MHE (conveyance, sortation, robotics, and custom automation)
-Create CAD models and drawings using SolidWorks
-Assist with prototyping, testing, and validation of hardware designs; modify parts/troubleshoot on site
-Perform design-for-manufacturing (DFM)/DFX analyses
-Perform quality/reliability/cost/schedule trade-offs
-Conduct component selection, tolerance analysis, and structural stress analysis calculations using both manual methods and FEA/simulation
-Travel to vendor/manufacturing/install sites as needed
-Collaborate with cross-functional teams including controls, software, operations, and procurement
-Author and maintain technical documentation (specifications, test plans, design reviews)
-Debug hardware issues and support root cause analysis
-Stay current with relevant industry standards and emerging technologies in automation
About the team
Amazon installs a significant quantity of new buildings every year. The historical model has been to allow each integrator to use their own equipment, controls, subsystems, and methodologies. While that has allowed Amazon to be successful to this point, the variability between buildings has proven difficult to support and scale. One MHS’ charge is to build partnerships to focus on consistency and scalability across our network of the future. We will be partnering with key suppliers to help them scale up their manufacturing capabilities to keep up with our needs, as well as refining their designs to drive innovation and operational uptime and better meet the specific needs of Amazon’s operational environment.
