About this role

PURPOSE

The Industrial BIM/VDC Detailer I will develop 3D models, partnering with the construction team to coordinate and clash model content. Using the coordinated model, the BIM/VDC Detailer will produce spool, coordination, and install drawings, as well as review completed work, to include checking for errors and verifying against contract documents. This person will create and develop relationships supportive of the Baker Group Core Focus with internal team members and external clients, as well as maintain and grow the “Client for Life” concept with new and existing clients. Performs related work as required.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are typical for this job. These are not to be constructed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Develop detailed 3D BIM models for mechanical and plumbing piping systems using industry-standard detailing software.
  • Produce spool sheets, shop drawings, installation drawings, material lists, and point layout files to support fabrication and field installation.
  • Perform advanced detailing of piping systems and hangers, including sizing, placement, and hole configurations (e.g., weep holes, HDG requirements).
  • Coordinate piping and plumbing systems with other trades using BIM coordination tools, including clash detection against models and point cloud data.
  • Generate coordination files and support layout activities for multiple piping systems simultaneously.
  • Review and markup submittals and P&IDs to ensure accuracy and alignment with project requirements.
  • Apply strong working knowledge of piping materials, hangers, and fabrication standards in all detailing work.
  • Develop structural load drawings and ensure proper support and load considerations are incorporated into designs.
  • Understand and apply appropriate Level of Development (LOD) to meet project objectives and deliverable requirements.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, project managers, and field teams to resolve design challenges and troubleshoot field issues.
  • Lead or co-lead model reviews with owners and project stakeholders, clearly communicating design intent and coordination efforts.
  • Participate in BIM coordination and internal and external project meetings, providing updates to project managers, detailing leaders, and field teams.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with project managers, engineers, foremen, general contractors, and other stakeholders throughout the construction process.
  • Maintain strong organization and time management skills to meet project deadlines, including flexibility to work extended hours when required.
  • Perform all core VDC Technician responsibilities with a higher level of proficiency, independence, and leadership.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Minimum of five years in the plumbing and steam fitting apprenticeship OR equivalent job experience 
  • OR a minimum of five years of directly related experience which aligns with the essential functions responsibilities outlined.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of plumbing, piping, and HVAC piping systems

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Plumbing and hydronic license
  • Valid driver’s license

 

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Ability to perform quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines
  • Proven dependability
  • Strong problem solving and leadership skills
  • Must be proficient in Revit, Navisworks, ACC, Stratus, Excel, Bluebeam, and Outlook
  • Ability to read construction documents, product literature, specifications and cut sheets
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and good math skills 
  • Proven ability to partner with design teams and field personnel 
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and multi-task effectively

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds
  • May have occasional visits to a job site which would require periods of standing, walking and/or climbing stairs
  • Occasional exposure to variety of temperature, weather and construction site conditions
