Location: This is a transfer opportunity for a Correctional Officer I at Denver Complex in Denver. 

Shift: Days, Wednesday/Thursday off.

This notice provides instructions about how to submit an application for a lateral transfer, voluntary demotion or classification transfer (collectively referred to as a transfer in these instructions) to a different facility within the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). The CDOC Office of Human Resources (OHR) administers the Centralized Transfer Process (CTP) for covered positions. When filling a covered position with a transfer, an AA will consult with OHR.

Upon receipt, your submission will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) to determine if you meet the criteria for a transfer to the requested classification. After the review, OHR will notify you with a status update. 

If you are applying as a Lateral Transfer, you must be a current Correctional Officer I (A1D2TX), and you must also meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

Description of Job

**Please note: all applications for transfer requests must be approved by the employee’s current Appointing Authority. After OHR reviews your application - if your name is being considered for a transfer, we will contact your current Appointing Authority at that time for review of your transfer request.

This position exists to maintain safety and security of facility and work sites. Position monitors access into and out of facility, and other specified areas. Through clear and accurate communication, trains and guides offenders and applies the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures and controls contraband by conducting offender counts, work site searches, strip searches, cell searches, pat searches and shakedowns; position monitors workplace environment and offender behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; position initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls offenders with the appropriate application of restraints or Use of Force techniques. Position monitors, supervises and escorts/transports offenders according to agency policy and prepares and submits required reporting. Position promotes a safe and secure environment through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations (ARs), facility Implementation Adjustments (IAs) and the Code of Penal Discipline (COPD).
Position maintains the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
  • Monitoring and controlling access to the facility and restricted areas;
  • Manning an armed post (this requires annual firearms certification);
  • Monitoring facility perimeter, detaining unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
  • Operating a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
  • Controlling movement of inmates throughout daily schedules;
  • Escorting and transporting inmates in authorized state vehicles;
  • Monitoring visiting areas;
  • Conducting formal, informal and emergency counts;
  • Cross checking and maintaining movement logs;
  • Conducting searches for contraband (this may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);
  • Inspecting facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards;
  • Inspecting inmate mail and property;
  • Utilizing proper protocols when responding to emergency situations, such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes;
  • Following established tool and key control, ensuring proper storage and documentation;
  • Attending roll call;
  • Documenting incidents utilizing established reporting practices;
  • Communicating pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Position is subject to working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security.

If you are applying as a Voluntary Demotion, you must be in a current classification that is higher than a Correctional Officer I (A1D2TX), or you must have been previously certified at the level of Correctional Officer I (A1D2TX). You must also meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

If you are applying as a Classification Transfer, your current classification must have the same pay range maximum as a Correctional Officer I (A1D2TX), and you must also meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

  • Ability to perform intermediate computer keyboarding skills and communicate via computer based email;
  • Ability to study information and recount events in a written, comprehensive, legible method;
  • Ability to incorporate the CDOC mission statement while completing daily job duties;
  • Knowledge of and willingness to apply effective correctional methods to prepare inmates for community reentry;
  • Willingness and ability to respectfully communicate with inmate families and the public;
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with inmates through daily monitoring in a variety of situations;
  • Ability to control, direct and instruct inmates individually and in groups;
  • Willingness to respectfully work with a diverse population;

  • Ability to detect attributes of objects such as size, shape and texture during searches and to manipulate security equipment;

  • Ability to learn about and utilize firearms, restraints, chemical agents, and security devices in a safe and professional manner;
  • Ability to learn to operate communications equipment in a professional manner (e.g., two-way radio, telephone switchboard, public address equipment);
  • Ability to seize, hold, grasp and turn objects;
  • Willingness to follow chain of command and established safety and security protocols;
  • Ability to quickly respond to emergencies (such as fights, medical emergencies, fires or escapes);
  • Ability to use physical force to control a situation;
  • Ability to climb stairs and walk on hard surfaces throughout shift;
  • Willingness and ability to work outside during inclement weather;
  • Willingness and ability to adhere to the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program.
