Job Summary

 

Certified Ophthalmology Assistant performs basic care in the ophthalmic clinic, supporting and performing diagnostic tests, preparing patients, documenting findings, and assisting in clinical procedures. Provides courtesy and professionalism to patients and families.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

• Reviews the patient’s chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
• Performs tests as delegated by the ophthalmologist and documents appropriately. Testing includes performing basic ocular testing such as visual acuity, eye pressure, and color vision tests, and administering eye drops or other medications as directed by the ophthalmologist.
• Prepares examination rooms and ensures all equipment is cleaned and operational.
• Properly sterilizes procedural instruments per Orlando Health infection prevention policies.
• Collects patient medical histories and prepares them for the ophthalmologist.
• Provides written education for patients and caregivers regarding eye care, treatment plans, medication usage, and surgery.
• Assists the department with scheduling patient appointments.
• Manages, orders, and keeps inventory of medical supplies as needed.
• Collaborates with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care for patients.
• Maintains a positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal,
state and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

• Is able to learn and gain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and can review data appropriate to the age-specific needs of the patients.
• Has the ability to learn the common ophthalmic diagnostic equipment, including its use and maintenance.
• Demonstrates strong patient care and customer service skills.
• Possesses good organizational and multitasking abilities.

Qualifications:

Education/Training

• High school diploma or equivalent.

Licensure/Certification

• Maintains a current BLS/Healthcare Provider Certification.
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) issued by the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology
