THE POSITION

Are you interested in a career in chemistry that helps protect the environment? The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Laboratories, is seeking a Chemist 1 to help test different materials for important environmental substances. This work uses specialized laboratory equipment and proven scientific methods. If you enjoy science and want to support the environment, this opportunity may be a great fit for you!

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the Volatile Analysis Unit by preparing samples, running analytical tests, and reviewing results to ensure they meet required standards. The work requires careful documentation, accurate operation of instruments, and close attention to laboratory procedures. As a Chemist 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Sample Handling: Log samples, maintain chain of custody, and report issues that may affect analytical accuracy
  • Pollutant Extraction: Use approved solvents and techniques to extract analytes and include required QC samples in each batch
  • Chromatography Analysis: Operate instruments, evaluate raw data, identify analytes, and review reports for accuracy before release
  • Method Support: Assist with implementing and improving methodologies, performing studies, and helping create or revise SOPs
  • Instrument Care: Complete preventive maintenance, document malfunctions, and coordinate repairs when needed
  • Quality Control: Use certified standards, conduct required QA studies, track QC records, and take corrective action when needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel is required
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry; or
  • A bachelor’s degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry. 
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Other Requirements:

  • You must possess and maintain a REAL ID or passport for this position. Proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.


This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding.


You must be eligible for selection in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
