Definition
This is intermediate level professional work in civil engineering.
An employee in this class independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to the design and development of civil engineering projects.
Works under the general supervision of a professional engineer, exercising considerable independent judgment in making difficult technical decisions. Completed work is reviewed for conformance to policy and professional standards.
Characteristic Work
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering and a minimum of one year of post-baccalaureate paid experience in civil engineering work. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license. PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS SHALL BE LIMITED TO PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE OF THE CITY OF AKRON WHOSE EXPERIENCE IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE MEETS THE QUALIFICATIONS.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering and of the design and construction of civil engineering projects. Considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and standards related to civil engineering and municipal contracting procedures.
Ability to effectively plan, design, and administer engineering projects, including the development and completion of engineering plans through the efforts of technical support personnel. List of essential job functions available upon request.
NOTE: Applicants who were permanent, full time employees with the City of Akron on or before September 16, 1993, and have maintained continuous employment at the date of future postings are "grandfathered" into the previous minimum qualifications for this classification as approved by the Civil Service Commission on June 22, 1989. (CSC 9/16/1993).
Competitive Examination Process
This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for seniority. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for seniority. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 90%, Seniority 10%. PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS SHALL BE LIMITED TO PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE OF THE CITY OF AKRON WHOSE EXPERIENCE IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE MEETS THE QUALIFICATIONS.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and appointment.
NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 90% for qualifying and 10% for seniority.
Residency and Veterans preference points will be awarded in conformance with the C.S.P.A. collective bargaining agreement if the candidate achieves a passing score in the competitive process.
