Within the Houston Public Works Department, the Houston Permitting Center Service Line (HPC) administers & enforces over 400 permit types for the City of Houston and its jurisdictions, annually reviews over 65 thousand commercial & residential plans, and manages over $80M in revenue and expenditures, respectively, related to permitting & regulatory operations. All 600+ members of the Houston Permitting Center are service providers committed to safe community development through the permitting and regulation of public and private construction and is home to three branches of service: Building Code Enforcement, Office of the City Engineer, and Business Support Services.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs Inspections, writes reports and researches the enforcement and application of various codes, ordinances, and technical specifications. Prepares and serves correction notices and may serve violation citations. Prepares, conducts, and reviews various types of sign inspection for compliance with specifications. Performs inspections for Houston Sign Code compliance, identifies problem areas and recommends solutions. Meets with general public, contractors, technical professionals, and businesses to respond to Inquiries and technical problems. Performs record keeping activities to maintain filing system reports and documentation. Researches and evaluates plans, specifications, and drawings. Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as computers or records boxes (up to 40 pounds)
and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier Ill Level.
Position Duties
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or a GED certificate and up to eighteen months of specialized education or training in a specific area or trade.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of experience related to customer service or an area of inspection to be performed is required.
Depending on the area of specialty, the position may require the experience listed above to be journey level, received after completion of an apprenticeship program.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. (AP 2-2).
Minimum Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates who have a working knowledge of the Houston Sign Cade, Bi-lingual in Spanish, and/or have experience with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic computer skills.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
