THE POSITION
Distribution: This posting is only open for current DOC employees.
This posting is for a detached duty assignment with the DOC Training Academy.
In accordance with PSCOA Side Letter - Local Agreement Detached Duty Training Instructors, signed 11/14/2012, which states: Corrections Officer 2's with regular status selected for the RA detached duty assignment will retain their current status. Corrections Officer 2's currently serving a probationary period selected for the TRA detached duty assignment will complete the remaining probationary period at the TRA.
This position will consist of a 40-hour work week, with work hours being Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.This position will be eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50/55.
This assignment will not affect benefits and pay. If desired, housing may be available at the Academy at the Commonwealth's rate (see Management Directive 315.14 Amended).
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Responsible for coordinating and instructing within a diverse training team courses at institutions, county prisons and the Training Academy, as contained within the Basic Training Program and various other specialized training courses.
Develop, prepare, review, and revise lesson plans, handouts, etc. for the various courses instructed at the Academy and/or in the field.
Function as a Group Leader as part of a training team. This includes, but is not limited to, conducting daily trainee roll call, completes daily performance assessments, uniform inspections, serves as first point of contact in the trainees' chain of command and when required, conducts informal coaching/counseling sessions.
Orientate new trainees concerning emergencies, medical procedures, academy housing, procedures within the basic training program and provide guidance. Report non-compliance of Department and/or Academy rules and regulations, as per established procedures.
Function as Program Coordinator for assigned courses. This will include coordinating, requesting, monitoring and evaluating assigned adjunct instructors.
Serve as a proctor for the weekly written/computerized examinations and program evaluations, while maintaining the confidentiality of testing material.
Perform Control Desk duties as assigned. This includes, but is not limited to screening of incoming calls, issuance of keys, security equipment and/or vehicles, maintaining logs, performing inventory of equipment assigned to an area, etc.
Prepare requisition requests for needed training supplies and equipment.
Provide input and support for the review and revision of the Basic Training Program.
Selected candidate will be required to participate in designated Instructor Courses for courses taught within Basic Training.
Deliver Basic and Specialized Training sessions as scheduled, following approved course material, and using best practices for adult learning and classroom management.
Support subject-matter expert instructors with classroom management.
Act as a lead for Academy adjunct instructors when you accompany the in Basic and Specialized training sessions.
Attend required mandatory and developmental training courses and meet annual mandatory training hours.
Report all injuries occurring in training immediately and as per established procedures.
Take immediate action to remedy any actions that may jeopardize the security or safety of the Training Academy.
Assist Basic Training Supervisor, Instructors, and Sergeants assigned to the Basic Training Unit in the maintenance, review, revision and development of forms, tests, handbooks, inventories, lesson plans and equipment.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
1. Supervise inmate details assigned to the Training Academy.
2. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates
3. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
4. Perform physically demanding tasks, e.g. running, physical control of inmate.
5. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
6. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
8. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions
9. Work all shifts and posts (except those that require an active PA driver's license or equivalent)
10. Operate basic office equipment
11. Maintain an active PA driver's license or equivalent that is specific to the class and type of vehicle to be operated pursuant to post requirements
12. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
13. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
14. Use and maintain various equipment and tools of the corrections profession
15. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
16. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
17. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
18. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
19. Visually observe inmates' activities
20. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff
21. Provide in service and on the job training
22. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
23. Maintain weapons qualifications in accordance with DOC Policy 5.1.1, Section 7
24. Travel as required in order to perform instruction, or related Academy functions

ELIGIBILITY - All Candidates:
1. Meet the minimum experience and training required for the job:
One year as a Corrections Officer 1 (Commonwealth job title);
OR
Two years of experience in corrections security work in a Pennsylvania state or county corrections facility. (Note: Persons seeking employment under this option will be required to successfully complete, or have completed, a training program conducted by the Department of Corrections.)
2. Be eligible for selection in accordance with Merit System Employment Regulations.
PA Residency is waived for this position.
