DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Corrections Plumbing Trade Instructors at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Phoenix teach and supervise inmates in practical and classroom settings to support vocational growth. They help ensure safe instruction, organized work routines, and strong learning outcomes. As a Corrections Plumbing Trade Instructor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Training Delivery: Provide classroom and on-the-job instruction in plumbing systems, distribution systems, drainage systems, heating systems, fire sprinkler systems, and building plumbing
  • Classroom Management: Maintain order and discipline, deliver curriculum, and track inmate attendance and training progress
  • Work Crew Oversight: Assign daily schedules, direct inmate work crews, and inspect finished plumbing work assignments
  • Tool Control: Issue, inventory, and account for all tools and materials used in training and work assignments
  • Material Planning: Determine needed materials and tools and prepare purchase requests when necessary

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position. 
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. A higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Five years of experience in the inspection, maintenance, repair, assembly, and installation of pipes, fittings, and fixtures used in heating, water, and drainage systems; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the plumbing trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the plumbing trade.

Other Requirements:
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.


Legal Requirement: 

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements. 


This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding.
