Job opening: Capital Litigation Attorney

The Office of Criminal Conflict & Civil Regional Counsel First Region (RC1) is now accepting applications for a full-time capital litigation attorney.  This is a highly challenging and deeply meaningful position working with a team of attorneys, mitigation specialists, investigators, and support staff focused solely on litigating capital cases in State Court within the region. The successful applicant will bring skill, diligence, curiosity, empathy, and professionalism to join our team in our unconditional commitment to our clients.

The RC1 Capital Litigation Team operates in the northern part of Florida across six judicial circuits and 32 counties. The successful candidate will be able to work from any of our offices within the region. Travel is regularly required across the region.  The counties within RC1 are: Alachua, Baker, Bay, Bradford, Calhoun, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Madison, Nassau, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Wakulla, Walton, Washington although travel may sometimes be required outside of the region and the state.

The qualified applicant will:  

• Be licensed to practice law in Florida.
• Have significant experience in criminal litigation, appellate advocacy, or capital defense.
• Be First or Second Chair death qualified per the requirements set forth in Florida Rule of Criminal Procedure 3.112 or be very close to becoming qualified.
• Have the ability to travel often throughout the region.
• Have the ability to manage a complex caseload, prioritize competing deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
• Be able to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary defense team, including co-counsel, mitigation specialists, investigators, experts, and support staff.
• Be receptive to feedback and committed to continued professional development and growth as a capital defense attorney.
• Be committed to providing client-centered representation with a strong understanding of mental health and life experience challenges of clients facing the most serious criminal charges.
• Be comfortable working with individuals (including clients, their families, prosecutors, investigators, judges, experts, fact witnesses, and members of the public) from diverse populations and directly with individuals facing the most serious criminal charges.
• Have a wide array of experience on capital defense issues.
• Have excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
• Have the ability to manage complex cases with multiple deadlines and legal issues.
• Have strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Have the ability to analyze and synthesize voluminous and complex discovery documents.
• Be very detailed oriented and have the ability to exercise sound professional judgment.
• Have first chair criminal jury trial experience with preference given to prior capital litigation experience.
• Have familiarity with and preferably a solid understanding of mitigation investigation and forensic evidence.
• Be committed to following the ABA Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases and the Supplementary Guidelines for the Mitigation Function of Defense Teams in Death Penalty Cases, as the minimum standard for quality representation.

The salary range for this position is $90,000-$125,000 and is commensurate with experience. Additionally, the State of Florida offers generous benefits to employees including health insurance, retirement, and paid vacation.
