About this role
The New York State Department of Transportation supports transportation services and infrastructure across the state. The Data Analyst 1/Trainee 1/Trainee 2 will identify data patterns and trends, perform data extraction and quality checks, develop analytical models and visualizations, and support data-driven policy and budget decisions.
What you'll do:
- Perform data extraction, aggregation, and quality checks from multiple sources and tables in support of trend identification and root cause analysis
- Develop charts, graphs, tables, and graphics to interpret and present data in a meaningful way. Communicate insights and recommendations effectively
- Contribute to data dictionary use, standards, training, and ongoing updates. Contribute to improving business performance and driving data-driven decision-making
- Collaborate with other Data Analysts and management across the Department to develop and build analytic models in support of policy development and budgetary proposals
- Take ownership of individual projects to move collaborations forward
- Utilize advanced analytical techniques to predict future infrastructure conditions and needs
- Leverage programming expertise to build unique datasets and analytical programs
- Filter and clean data by reviewing computer reports, printouts, and performance indicators to locate and correct code and data problems. Verify data quality to ensure accurate analysis and reporting
- Develop and implement databases, data collection systems and data analysis activities
- Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources
- Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations
What they're looking for:
- To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law
- Bachelor's degree in data or computer science, informatics, economics, statistics, mathematics, or a related field
- Bachelor's degree in data or computer science, informatics, economics, statistics, mathematics, or a related field and one year of experience* in advanced excel analysis
- Bachelor's degree and either: satisfactory completion of a two-year traineeship or two years of experience* in data visualization, and statistical models and data mining tools
- A master's degree in data or computer science, informatics, economics, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the specialized experience
- A Ph.D. in the above fields may substitute for two years of the specialized experience
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
