COUNTY EXECUTIVE OFFICE
The County of Orange, County Executive Office implements policies of the Board of Supervisors, supports County departments, oversees the County's infrastructure and real estate assets, prepares the annual County budget, manages the County’s public debt program and assists the public. The County Executive Officer is the highest-ranking appointed executive in the County and works with members of the Board of Supervisors and their staff, elected and appointed department heads and the County's 19,000 employees to oversee the provision of essential government services through 22 departments. The County Executive Office is organized into six divisions: County Operations, Finance, Human Resource Services, Information Technology, Real Estate and Government & Community Relations. CEO aids in supporting the County Departments. There is potential with this recruitment to be placed at different agencies within the County.
THE OPPORTUNITY/RESPONSIBILITIES
The CEO Data Analytics Unit seeks a data analyst intern with a background in database management, statistical analyses, and data visualization techniques to assist with multi agency and department projects within the County. The data analytics graduate level intern will be supporting multiple projects. Examples of potential projects may include countrywide need assessments, OC Justice through Prevention and Intervention (OC Cares), supporting various departments on data requests, and reporting of various data to Orange County advisory councils.
The intern will be supervised by a Data Analytics Manager and will obtain necessary trainings related to data within projects (e.g., Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Compliance, Criminal Justice Information Services Compliance, etc.).
The intern will be expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Utilize programs such as R, Power BI, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Perform data cleaning and validation techniques
- Calculate and report performance indicators, trends, and potential correlations
- Create reports, data dashboards and data visualizations
- Collaborate with staff within the CEO's office as well as within various agencies or departments
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This recruitment is open to applicants pursuing or graduated with their bachelor’s or graduate degree. Candidates should have completed coursework pertaining to Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics or related area with a focus on data analytics.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for the Data Analytics Internship will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and will demonstrate a strong proficiency in programming languages in R, statistical analysis, report writing, GIS mapping, and creating data dashboards and visualizations.
Collaboration and attention to detail are must-have strengths.
TIME COMMITMENT
The internship length is 3 to 6 months with a commitment of 15-20 hours per week.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND SCREENING/REFERENCE CHECK
Prior to placement, the applicant may be assigned to support County departments such as the County Executive Office, John Wayne Airport, or Probation. The applicant will be asked to undergo a LiveScan criminal record check through the California Department of Justice that requires a Social Security number and state-issued driver's license or identification card. AIRPORT ACCESS REQUIREMENTS FOR PLACEMENT WITH JWA
The successful candidate must clear background check which includes a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and Security Threat Assessment (STA). References may also be contact to verify the applicant's qualifications.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR PLACEMENT WITH PROBATION
The Probation Department requires that all candidates undergo an extensive background investigation process, to the satisfaction of the Department. Candidates must successfully clear prior to the start of their internship. All internship offers are contingent upon successful completion of the background investigation.
