About this role

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory advances science and technology to strengthen U.S. security and promote global stability. The Data Science Institute Undergraduate Student Intern will provide technical and research support to scientific projects, analyze data, participate in research activities and curriculum events, and present results to Laboratory staff and peers.

What you'll do:

  • Provide technical and/or research support to projects in one or more of the above areas, working with scientists, engineers, and technical staff members
  • Participate in research in assigned area under close supervision
  • Gather and analyze data and information in support of scientific research
  • Participate in research planning and evaluation discussions
  • Participate in DSSI curriculum, including a weeks-long team challenge, networking, seminars, tours, and related events
  • Present individual and team results to Lab staff and your peers through presentations and/or poster sessions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What they're looking for:

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See Additional Information section below for details
  • Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or other related STEM fields. *If you are starting a graduate degree program in Fall of 2027 you must apply for the Data Science Summer Institute Graduate position (Posting code: REF8831S).*
  • Proven ability to adapt and thrive in challenging situations, demonstrating resilience and problem-solving skills to achieve goals while overcoming setbacks
  • Ability to apply basic computational science and/or mathematical principles to solve technical problems
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills
  • Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas
  • Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Age 18 or older at the start of the internship
  • Must have GPA of 3.0 or higher
