About this role
The Mutual Group is building a modern analytics organization that supports business strategy and profitable underwriting growth. As a Data Science Intern, you will apply analytics to real property & casualty insurance business problems, supporting model monitoring, exploratory analysis, documentation, and learning foundational insurance and data science workflows.
What you'll do:
- Support exploratory data analysis for pricing, underwriting, claims, or operational analytics use cases
- Build or enhance repeatable reporting outputs such as model monitoring summaries, rating variable distributions, actual-versus-expected analysis, or lift-chart support
- Help document modeling datasets, feature logic, assumptions, limitations, and data lineage
- Contribute to code cleanup, reusable functions, testing scripts, and version-controlled project organization
- Learn foundational insurance concepts including exposure, premium, claims frequency, claims severity, loss ratio, rate adequacy, and underwriting risk selection
- Translate analytical findings into business-friendly summaries for actuarial, underwriting, claims, or leadership audiences
- Shadow team members to understand how model outputs are consumed in pricing, profitability analysis, underwriting workflows, and management reporting
- Prepare a capstone presentation connecting technical work to business value – such as improved pricing insight, greater efficiency, better monitoring, or clearer documentation
What they're looking for:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate (junior/senior) or graduate degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, analytics, economics, or a related field
- Comfort with at least one programming language, preferably Python or R
- Basic SQL skills, or the ability and willingness to learn SQL quickly
- Coursework or project experience involving statistics, regression, machine learning, data visualization, or applied analytics
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and an interest in applying analytics to real business problems
- Interest in insurance, financial services, risk analytics, or business decision support
- Strong analytical thinking and quantitative skills
- Exposure to version control (e.g., Git), data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau), or model monitoring concepts
- Curiosity, reliability, and a collaborative, feedback-oriented mindset
- Comfort with at least one programming language, preferably Python or R
Benefits:
- Mentorship Programs: Pairing interns with experienced professionals.
- Networking Events: Intern mixers, speaker series, or meet-and-greets with executives.
- Volunteer Opportunities: Organized events for community service.
- Free Lunch: On-site cafeteria available Tuesday-Thursday.
- A 39-hour work week designed to support productivity and well-being.
