Data Scientist / AI Engineer Job Details | Bechtel

Bechtel Corporation is an engineering, procurement, and construction company applying AI, robotics, and digital tools to project environments. The Data Scientist / AI Engineer will design, develop, validate, and deploy production-ready AI and machine learning solutions, prepare data, and collaborate with engineers, software teams, and subject matter experts to improve project productivity and visibility.

What you'll do:

• Build, validate, and help deploy AI/ML models for well-defined use cases, working alongside senior data scientists to refine success metrics with stakeholders
• Support scalable data preparation: profiling, cleansing, integration, and feature engineering, partnering with data engineers to build reliable data pipelines
• Develop and deploy GenAI and ML models using modern AI frameworks, transforming prototypes into scalable, production-ready solutions
• Assist in deploying models on Azure ML and Databricks, integrating into Bechtel’s digital ecosystem under guidance and following established best practices
• Contribute to monitoring, evaluating, and improving deployed models to sustain measurable business impact over time
• Help ensure solutions meet Bechtel’s security, compliance, and governance requirements
• Communicate technical concepts and findings clearly to both teammates and non-technical stakeholders
• Stay current with emerging AI including agentic systems and multimodal models, and rapidly iterate ideas into working solutions

What they're looking for:

• Requires a University Hire with 1-2 years of experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience
• Strong programming foundation in Python and core AI/ML libraries, supporting development of scalable and production-ready models
• Hands-on experience with Generative AI frameworks, including LangChain and LangGraph, along with prompt engineering and optimization techniques
• Solid grounding in statistics, experimental design, and rigorous model evaluation
• Strong fundamentals in machine learning methods and in data structures and algorithms
• Experience with data preparation, feature engineering, and SQL/NoSQL data stores
• Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, Databricks) through coursework, internships, or projects
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical work into clear, actionable outcomes
• Demonstrated initiative and impact: internships, research, open-source contributions, competitions (e.g., Kaggle), or substantial academic/personal projects
• Exposure to MLOps practices: Git version control, CI/CD, and model monitoring
• Hands-on experience taking a model from prototype to a working or deployed application
• Familiarity with knowledge graphs, agent-based AI systems, or predictive analytics
