About this role
Premier Marine is a family-owned manufacturer of pontoon boats. The Design Engineer Intern will support collaborative product development by designing pontoon components and systems from concept through production, conducting engineering analyses, and contributing to testing, certification, and design improvements.
What you'll do:
- Create product designs aligned with engineering principles, company and industry manufacturing processes, government regulations, and customer requirements
- Utilize root cause problem solving to drive design related product improvements
- Complete Engineering analysis, electronic models, and statistical analysis to predict the success of component and system designs prior to physical prototypes
- Generate CAD models, layouts, detail drawings, and tolerance analysis required to produce robust design solutions, and execute tasks for the release cycle
- Establish a reasonable project schedule and manage timely completion of tasks
- Determine component manufacturing process to meet overall performance and cost
- Prepare new concept designs/sketches and evaluates new technologies to drive innovation and competitive advantage
- Execute research and development activities to drive the technical evolution of component and system designs including: creating design reviews to gain cross-functional partner input, planning and executing prototype builds, driving system verification and validation testing, executing certification activities, and driving design improvements/revisions based on learnings
- Analyze field problems and warranty data to drive corrective actions
- Perform other miscellaneous project related assignments
What they're looking for:
- Required - Pursuing a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering
- Required – Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Completion of at least 2 years of Engineering coursework
- Experience with a 3-D CAD modeling package such as Solidworks
- Experience with analytical tools based on engineering principles: Application of free body diagrams and hand calculations of statics and dynamics; Computer modeling such as FEA, CFD experience desired; GD&T and dimensional tolerance stack-ups; Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- High level of people skills, able to work in a team environment, excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Quick learner with high level of ambition and resolve, self-starter able to manage complexity and ambiguous design paths, creative problem solver that can drive innovative solutions
- Microsoft software including Excel, Project, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
- Must have enough manual dexterity and stability as required for precision work
- Must be able to see details at close range
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time
- Must be able to read work instructions and drawings
