About the Department

The Department of Transportation’s Tunnel Maintenance Division is looking for dedicated individuals to join our team as Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanics. Position Duties

In this position, you will focus on maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment used in transportation operations. The role supports safe, reliable performance of essential machinery through skilled mechanical work. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Repairs: Repair and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment
  • Preventative Maintenance: Carry out scheduled maintenance, diagnostics, tune ups, and system adjustments
  • State Inspections: Complete required safety and emissions inspections and perform repairs for compliance
  • Equipment Diagnostics: Identify mechanical problems using diagnostic tools and determine proper repair methods
  • Safety Practices: Maintain a clean work area, follow safety procedures, and report hazards promptly
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate equipment records and report missing or damaged parts

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Shifts may vary seasonally, due to weather, or based on operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position. 
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,492 (before taxes).

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
