As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee with the Department of Transportation, you will enter a training path that builds strong technical abilities. Position Duties
This role supports the upkeep and repair of vehicles and equipment needed for safe transportation operations across the region. It provides hands-on learning while you develop strong mechanical skills. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee, you will perform the following duties:
- Basic Repairs: Perform mechanical work on cars, trucks, and heavy equipment as training progresses
- Preventative Care: Complete routine maintenance tasks that help reduce equipment wear and extend service life
- Diagnostics: Identify mechanical issues and assist with selecting repair steps, procedures, and needed parts
- Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, maintain clean work areas, and help prevent accidents
- Equipment Records: Maintain accurate information about completed repairs and equipment conditions

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours vary from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, 12:00 AM to 8:00 AM, and 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Shift work, overtime, and travel are required.. Work hours are subject to change during the summer and winter seasons.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,844 (before taxes).

Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or
- Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
- All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
- This position will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
Additional Requirements:
- Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
