Position Summary: The New York City school system is the largest in the country, composed of 1 million students and 75,000+ teachers in approximately 1,600 schools. The core functions of Curriculum and Instruction (CI) are to work with educators and external partners to: produce high quality instructional resources that align to the New York State Learning Standards illustrating the path to post secondary readiness from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade; facilitate the availability of exemplary citywide student programs for students and families as well as serving as models of effective instructional practices; and deliver relevant, engaging, and research based professional learning opportunities designed to support teachers’ and school leaders’ instructional goals.
Arts Office (AO) leads the effort to achieve equity and access to quality arts education. AO supports teachers and school leaders in the development of quality arts instructional and professional development programs, and resources and materials to enhance teacher effectiveness. Additionally, AO administers citywide student programs in the arts to augment college and career preparation and encourage active civic participation.
Under the direction of the Executive Director of AO, the Director of Dance provides leadership, guidance for dance educators and programs in public schools as well as serve as a liaison between New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and external organizations offering dance and dance related services to schools. They are responsible for the supervision and management of a team of dance and program specialists involved in the development and design of professional development in instructional guidance and content.
This position will be responsible for managing the development and design of dance resources aligned to with Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and the NYS Learning Standards for the Arts, instructional guidance, and professional development in support of a comprehensive PreK-12 dance instruction program for Borough/Citywide Office, superintendents, school leaders, and teachers. Additional and key projects include the supervision of the Arnhold New Dance Teacher Support Program, facilitating key partnerships with dance and higher education entities, and leading the creation of blended and remote instructional resources for dance teachers in collaboration with teachers and dance education organizations. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: The Director will work closely with the Executive Director for AO, PreK-12 dance teachers, school administrators, central offices within Teaching and Learning, The Fund for Public Schools (FPS), philanthropic dance education funders, and arts and cultural organizations providing arts education services to NYCPS schools.
Responsibilities
- Carries out the mission and vision of the Chancellor.
- Oversees and manages all dance related initiatives.
- Leads development of blended and remote instructional resources for dance teachers.
- Supervises the dance team’s work of coordinating and facilitating dance instructional content and curriculum development.
- Ensures a high level of quality in dance practices, content and delivery structures offered to constituents.
- Conducts needs assessments and analyzes student and other data at key points in year to determine dance areas requiring emphasis and support; establishes goals and objectives for the dance team based on these analyses.
- Engages in high capacity resource development and delivery of high volume, high quality professional learning.
- Leads a team of dance instructional specialists; develops and delivers professional development events and resources that reflect the latest research, standards and policy in dance instruction.
- Provides consultative expertise to a broad range of constituents and partners, reflecting the full range of evidenced student needs.
- Directs Arnhold New Dance Teacher Support Program, including collaboration with the Fund for Public Schools and funder.
- Actively promotes placement of new dance teachers through relationships with higher education teacher training programs.
- Works with the Fund for Public Schools (FPS) to raise funds for NYCPS dance programs, and multi-arts education programs; secure and implement citywide privately funded programs in support of NYCPS dance education; monitors grant implementation and program budgets.
- Works collaboratively with representatives from partnering institutions and organizations, including the academic community and the arts and cultural community, to oversee and facilitate implementation and management of dance initiatives, including the implementation of dance instruction, Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and range of related curriculum and professional learning resources in New York City schools.
- Interfaces with other Central NYCPS offices and the State Education Department to align content standards as appropriate.
- Works collaboratively to write funding proposals for citywide grants when required.
- Supports NYCPS dance teachers and school leaders through ongoing school visits, class observations, email and phone guidance to strengthen dance education programming.
- Organizes, manages and facilitates the sharing of best practices reflecting current research in dance instruction throughout the varied school support structures.
- Creates updated Comprehensive Dance Examinations annually with an item writing team; supervises dance exam administration and scoring.
- Serves as liaison with the Office of Assessment Operations and Scan Center in the production and recording of examination materials.
- Works collaboratively and synergistically with the Executive Director of AO to ensure alignment for the full range of student achievement and needs.
- Monitors the quality of dance education services provided to schools by arts organizations and cultural institutions, and assists with the associated contract review process
- Conducts and stays abreast of subject area research to remain current with the latest developments in the area of dance and works collaboratively in sharing these resources.
- Works collaboratively with the AO and Borough Arts Director and on cross functional initiatives with other NYCPS offices.
- Builds a collaborative team focused on service to the field.
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
Applicants must possess a valid New York State certificate in School Administration/Supervision (SAS), School District Administrator (SDA), School Building Leadership (SBL), or the Administrator Certificate. We do not accept internship certificates.

Preferred
- Successful teaching experience in dance.
- Minimum of 3 years successful experience with managerial/supervisory, administrative, facilitation, and curriculum roles and responsibilities at the school/district/central office level.
- Proven experience and expertise in the implementation of a Blueprint aligned dance program, including experience in the design and delivery of staff development.
- Ability to deliver high quality professional development activities and resources.
- Deep understanding of multiple dance styles and genres.
- Well developed ability to analyze, organize and explain data in clear ways to indicate impact and implications for practice.
- Ability to create and manage budgets for various public and private programs
- Success in working collaboratively with other professional staff and outside organizations and experts on instructional issues, program implementation, assessment, and program evaluation.
- Excellent spoken, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to outcome based accountability, data driven decision making, differentiated instruction, and continuous adult learning as drivers of improved student outcomes.
- Well versed in national, state and city Blueprint dance standards and research literature.
- Prior experience directing and/or facilitating a team.
- Prior experience in supporting constituents in the area of dance.
- Strong adult facilitation and presentation skills.
- Experience writing curriculum, assessments, and standards.
- Passionate commitment to empowering teachers and students through arts education.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
- An accessible, transparent, and collaborative managerial working style.

Salary: $154,038 - $181,604
