THE POSITION

Join the Department of Transportation as a Driver License Examiner and be part of a fast-paced and meaningful mission. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on testing driver license applicants and assisting customers at Driver License Centers while supporting secure and accurate identity verification. As a Driver License Examiner, you will perform the following duties:

  • Driver Evaluation: Determine applicant qualifications and evaluate vehicle condition for safe operation
  • Testing Administration: Administer vision, knowledge, and road tests according to established standards
  • Document Review: Examine identity and residency documents to verify authenticity and detect fraud
  • Customer Processing: Issue driver license products and provide information on renewals and requirements
  • System Verification: Access databases to authenticate documents and confirm licensing eligibility

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 80 hours bi-weekly
  • Work hours are 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime and travel may be required
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position. 
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant (commonwealth title); or
  • Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver’s License or equivalent and twenty-one years of age at the time of application.
  • This position requires no suspensions or revocations of a driver’s license during the five year period immediately preceding employment.
  • All employees in this job hired after February 28, 2022, are required to obtain an active unrestricted Class M driver’s license within the first six months of employment or before the end of the probationary period and maintain it during employment.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.


Legal Requirements: 

  • This position requires the selected candidate to undergo and pass a Fingerprint and Name-Based Criminal History Check prior to employment. 


This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. 


You must be eligible for selection in accordance with merit system employment regulations. 


Recruitment Methods:

Promotion Without Examination (PWOE): 

  • Class Restrictions for Promotion Without Examination Only - You must have or have held regular civil service status in one of the following classifications:
    • Driver License Examiner Assistant 
  • Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.
  • The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
  • Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher. 
  • Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower class by the posting closing date with no break in service.
