Join S&C to make an impact on tomorrow’s energy challenges and become an employee-owner! Available Shift: 1st shift: 8:00 am–4:30 pm, Monday–Friday Full-Time Summer 2027 Internship The estimated hourly range for this position is $22–$30 per hour based on experience. As an Electronics Engineering Intern, you'll work alongside experienced engineers on the power and control hardware behind S&C's automation, protection, and switching products, including the 6800 Controls platform and IntelliRupter. This is a hands-on, closely mentored internship built for a student who is still learning the profession. You'll be an entry-level contributor on a project or work team, supporting real hardware projects under the guidance of a design engineer while you build practical skills in circuit design, lab work, and testing. Work is closely supervised, the problems you'll tackle are meaningful but not complex, and the goal is your own growth and development as much as the work you deliver. ## Responsibilities - Support Electronics Design: Assist engineers with schematic capture, component selection, and design documentation for analog, digital, and power circuits used in utility control products. Help maintain bills of materials and design files, and learn how a printed circuit board goes from concept to prototype. - Hands-On Lab and Testing: Build, bring up, and test prototype boards in the lab under supervision. Take measurements with oscilloscopes, probes, power supplies, and electronic loads, and learn structured troubleshooting by working through issues with your mentor. Record results clearly so others can reproduce them. - Data, Analysis, and Documentation: Organize and analyze test data, create simple charts and summaries, and help document findings in test reports and design notes. Apply basic engineering analysis to help the team make design decisions. - Learn and Contribute to the Team: Participate in design reviews, staff meetings, and team discussions. Ask thoughtful questions, share what you learn, and communicate your progress and any obstacles to your mentor and the team. Complete a summer project and present your results to the group at the end of the internship. - Compliance: Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies, safety rules, and lab practices. ## Qualifications - In-progress degree program from an accredited university or college with a concentration in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering field, having completed at least the sophomore year by summer 2027. - Coursework in circuit analysis, electronics, or digital systems, with a working understanding of basic electrical engineering fundamentals. - Some hands-on experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies, from coursework, projects, or clubs. - Familiarity with at least one analysis or programming tool such as Python, MATLAB, or a SPICE-based circuit simulator. - Good problem-solving instincts and a willingness to investigate the underlying cause of an issue rather than just the symptom. - Good communication skills and comfort asking questions and sharing information with the team. - Eagerness to learn, take direction and feedback, and take ownership of your own development. - Ability to work onsite in Chicago for the summer and to work well in a collaborative, fast-paced team environment. - Comfort with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. ## Preferred Qualifications - Personal, club, or capstone projects involving circuit design, PCB layout, embedded systems, or robotics. - Exposure to power electronics topics such as power supplies, batteries, or motor drives. - Experience with an ECAD tool such as OrCAD, KiCad, Altium, or an equivalent. - Coursework or interest in power systems, protection and control, or the electric utility industry. - Familiarity with microcontrollers, FPGAs, or common board-level interfaces such as I2C, SPI, and UART. - Prior internship, co-op, or lab assistant experience in an engineering setting. ## Major Physical Demands - Occasional standing on shop floor. - Occasional lifting of production parts and tooling less than 50 pounds. - Frequent walking throughout the facility both indoors and outdoors. - Occasional carrying of light objects. - Infrequent pushing and pulling of objects. - Occasional bending. - Infrequent reaching. - Occasional handling of parts or tools. - Frequent use of a personal computer, keyboard, and monitor.S&C Electric is committed to equal-opportunity employment.
