The engineering field intern (Construction Inspector) inspects routine construction items for conformance to plans, specifications, special provisions, and terms of the contract. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

Responsibilities - What you’ll do

What you’ll do:   

  • Support the Field Office staff as needed. Typical duties include: assisting with testing required for research, obtaining samples from the field, reviewing specifications and standards, calculating take-offs, and creating spreadsheets as assigned.
  • Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
  • Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
  • Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisor fully informed as to activities or unusual conditions on the job.
  • Provides field checks for contractor surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; serves as instrument operator on staking of large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent. 

Special Working Conditions:

  • This is a wage, non-benefits eligible position, working no more than 1,039 hours per year. 
  • The typical working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Job requires moderate physical activity.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
