What We're Seeking: The DATCP’s Division of Food and Recreation Safety, Bureau of Food and Recreational Businesses (BFRB), is recruiting for an Environmental Health Sanitarian (Entry or Senior) position in the Retail and Recreational Services Section. We will be filling the positions at the Entry or Senior level depending on the qualifications of the selected candidates. 

This is a field-based position and will be assigned a headquarter location based on business needs. The selected applicant can select a headquarter in one of the following counties: 

• Price, Rusk, or Taylor County

When applying please select all counties in which you are willing to be headquartered. 

The qualifying candidate is not required to live in a county headquarter location. However, there is no expense reimbursement for drive time and gas mileage to commute to the assigned headquarter location. The specific headquarter city used for determining payment of drive time and expense reimbursement will be determined at the time of hire.

The impact of work pertains to the regulation of retail food facilities, lodging facilities, vending machines, swimming pools, campgrounds, and recreational-education camp facilities. The oversight helps to ensure the overall health and safety needs are met for the consumers utilizing these facilities and their products.

Employee is responsible for: On-site evaluation, inspection, and documentation of sanitation, processes, equipment, and hazards; application of codes and statutes; providing technical consultation and educational services to industry representatives, business owners/operators, agents, local and state officials, the general public, etc.  Based upon evaluation and/or inspection findings staff are responsible to prepare reports and take or recommend enforcement action as outlined in applicable codes and statutes.  This includes the ability to issue, deny, or in some instances, closure orders when an imminent health threat is found.  Examples of the various facilities is summarized below:

Food businesses include: Retail food establishments, including mobile food establishments, transient food establishments and vending operations.

Recreational businesses include: Recreational-educational camps; campgrounds; public swimming facilities; hotels; motels; tourist rooming houses and bed & breakfast establishments.

The entry level is in schedule-range 15-04 with a starting pay of $31.62-33.00 per hour. The senior level is in schedule-range 15-03 with a starting pay of $34.18-35.90.

A $0.30 per hour Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) add-on may be available depending on qualifications.

These positions are not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan at the time of hire.

At DATCP, we strive to deliver efficient and effective programs and services to Wisconsin agriculture, consumers, and businesses.  The Department has numerous on-the-job training (OJT) opportunities, unique to each Bureau. 

These OJT opportunities include direct experience and practice through collaboration with co-workers/supervisor, job shadowing, FDA training courses (online/in-person), field inspection training, and special events (state fair, conferences/meetings, etc.).

Transferable Skills: Inspection methods, conflict management, stakeholder engagement, and active listening.

Conditions of Employment:

A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment.

Possess a valid driver's license or the ability to provide one’s own transportation for work purposes.

Travel is required for approximately 90% of this position’s duties.

Must possess physical abilities to climb and work at elevated heights such as on catwalks. 
 

Must have ability to; stand, walk, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs.

Through use of sight and hearing must be able observe physical surroundings.
 

Must have the ability to complete outdoor job activities 12 months of the year. The employee will encounter inclement weather and extreme temperatures.

Minimally qualified candidates will have the following:

• The REHS/RS credential and application eligibility at the time of hire

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Health from a college accredited in the United States; or

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher accredited in the United States (with 30 semester hours of college credit in basic Science coursework; college credit in Math or Statistics); and

  • Two or more years of work experience in the field of environmental health; or 

  • Associate degree with 5+ years of work experience in the field of environmental health

     

OR

• Possession of a valid Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) certification 

To be considered for the senior level, qualified applicants must have the following:

• Possession of a valid Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) certification
