EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE MECHANIC I, II, III, OR IV

Job Summary: This position is responsible for performing skilled mechanical diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on City vehicles and equipment, ensuring operational efficiency, safety, and reliability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Equipment Mechanic I: (Full Salary Range: $51,000 - $65,280)

• Conducts entry-level maintenance and servicing of automobiles, including preventive care and light-duty equipment engine repairs, utilizing appropriate tools and equipment while working independently with minimal supervision.
• Effectively prioritizes tasks to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
• Performs routine service on light-duty engines such as mowers, tractors, light and medium-duty trucks, and earth-moving equipment, including stationary and gasoline-powered components and small engines. Maintenance tasks include lubrication, oil and filter changes, tire replacement, hose and belt inspections, accessory repairs, and functionality testing to verify proper equipment performance.
• Completes necessary workflow documentation, maintains accurate service and maintenance records, and ensures the shop, equipment, and tools remain clean, organized, and in safe working condition at all times. Monitors inventory levels and communicates replenishment needs to appropriate personnel.

Equipment Mechanic II: ($57,120 - $71,400)
in addition to above duties

• Conducts thorough testing, inspection, and diagnostics on gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment to accurately identify and resolve mechanical issues.
• Performs tuning and repairs on key engine components, including fuel injection systems, automatic transmissions, air conditioning systems, suspension systems, tires, hydraulic and air brakes, electrical and ignition systems, drivetrain and manual transmissions, clutches, rear axle assemblies, cooling and heating systems, fuel and exhaust systems, and other essential engine components.
• Executes metal fabrication and welding tasks utilizing torches, gas welders, and arc welders to ensure structural integrity and proper equipment functionality.
• Provides guidance, mentorship, and technical support to junior team members, fostering skill development and knowledge enhancement within the maintenance team.

Equipment Mechanic III: ($63,240 - $83,640)
in addition to above duties

• Performs tuning and repairs on diesel engine components, including fuel injection systems, automatic transmissions, air conditioning systems, suspension systems, tires, hydraulic and air brakes, electrical and ignition systems, drivetrain and manual transmissions, clutches, rear axle assemblies, cooling and heating systems, fuel and exhaust systems, and other critical engine elements.
• Conducts advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics to identify mechanical failures and system defects, ensuring accurate and efficient problem resolution.
• Executes repairs with precision, ensuring proper clearances, fittings, adjustments, settings, replacements, and overall mechanical integrity in accordance with technical manuals, specifications, and industry standards.
• Performs comprehensive engine overhauls, rebuilds, and major system repairs, including diesel, gasoline, and other internal combustion engines, automatic and standard transmissions, heavy-duty driveline systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls.
• Supports new employee onboarding and training, providing mentorship and oversight to entry-level team members to foster skill development and operational excellence.

Equipment Mechanic IV: ($69,360 - $89,760)
in addition to above duties

• Performs comprehensive overhauls, repairs, and maintenance on equipment and trucks equipped with hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical utility systems and specialized controls not commonly found in standard vehicles. Ensures proper alignment and adjustment of components to optimize functionality and operational efficiency, implementing modifications in accordance with technical specifications and industry guidelines.
• Serves on safety and other organizational committees as needed, effectively communicating committee activities to staff and leadership while representing employee feedback in discussions to enhance workplace initiatives.
• Assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Crew Lead, overseeing operations and providing guidance to ensure continuity of workflow and team effectiveness.

Qualifications:

• All Levels: Must possess a valid South Dakota driver’s license High school diploma or equivalent required. Qualifies for Entry Level ASE certification, or comparable within one year of hire.
• Levels II, III, IV: Must possess a valid Class A South Dakota Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within 120 days of hire.

Equipment Mechanic I:

• Two-year vocational/technical certificate in operation and repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment.
• Three (3) years experience in repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment.

Equipment Mechanic II:

• Two-year vocational/technical certificate in operation and repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment.
• Five (5) years experience in repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment

Equipment Mechanic III & IV:

• Two-year vocational/technical certificate in repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment and diesel engine repair.
• Five (5) years experience in repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment, at least three (3) years of which include repair of diesel-powered heavy equipment, hydraulics, and welding.

Work Environment:

• This position operates in a dynamic and physically demanding environment, frequently working near moving mechanical components and exposure to airborne particles, fumes, vibrations, and extreme weather conditions.
• The role may involve contact with toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme temperatures, and a potential risk of electrical shock.
• The noise level in the workspace is typically loud.
• This position requires substantial physical activity, including frequent standing, reaching, handling, and maneuvering of equipment.
• Tasks may involve stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, with occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, and sensory assessments such as tasting or smelling.
• The role necessitates the ability to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds, with occasional handling of loads up to 100 pounds.
• Essential vision requirements include close, distance, and color perception, as well as peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
