THE POSITION

Are you a skilled and dedicated equipment operator seeking a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact as an Equipment Operator B with the Department of Human Services? This role allows you to support important hospital operations by safely operating a variety of vehicles and maintenance equipment at Danville State Hospital. You help keep essential services running smoothly across the facility grounds. It is a chance to use your abilities in a setting where reliability and teamwork truly matter.



 

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position operates medium weight vehicles and maintenance equipment to support hospital programs, transportation needs, and grounds operations. As an Equipment Operator B, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Operation: Drive lightweight and medium weight vehicles to support transportation and material needs
  • Bus Transport: Operate medium weight buses to move patients and staff on and off hospital grounds
  • Equipment Use: Handle grounds equipment such as tractors, loaders, mowers, and other tools for upkeep
  • Material Handling: Deliver and move items by operating equipment and loading or unloading materials
  • Maintenance Tasks: Perform basic preventive maintenance and assist with equipment repair activities
  • General Support: Assist with general laboring, housekeeping, and related duties to maintain hospital functions

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Your work schedule may change based on operational needs.
  • Overtime and travel: As needed
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A; or
  • Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and specialized maintenance equipment used at this level with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more: or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience or training.

Special Requirement:

  • You must possess a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires that employees in this class have a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) and air brake endorsement, in order to meet operational needs.
  • Employees in this position are required to obtain passenger endorsement within six months of employment.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.


Legal Requirements:

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act.
    • Under the Act, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police and FBI clearance.


This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. If no applicable union-covered bidders apply, other applicants may be considered.

    • Equipment Operator A
  • Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.
  • The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
  • Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher. 
  • Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower class by the posting closing date with no break in service.
