About this role
About the Department
The Field Staff Management Co-Op will support the Director and Managers of Field Staff in their day-to-day activities supporting the Field Staff team of Resident Engineers and Construction Inspectors. The co-op will be required to be highly responsive and able to prioritize departmental needs in the best interest of the MBTA.
We are looking to hire two (2) co-ops, who will work onsite (40 hours per week) for at least six (6) months, January - June. Although hours may vary depending on assignment, co-ops can expect to work 7:00am – 3:30pm Monday – Friday, eight (8 hours) per day with a 30-minute lunch break. Assignments are in-person at 10 Park Plaza, Boston or on a construction site with construction / project site visits throughout the week. This position is not eligible for overtime or holiday pay.
Position Duties
- Assist the Manager of Field Staff with the day-to-day management of 40+ Resident Engineers and 70+ Construction Inspectors.
- Track daily absences, FMLA, and PFML using an Excel tracker and Outlook calendar.
- Improve efficiency by automating repetitive and redundant tasks.
- Deliver innovative solutions to dynamic problems.
- Assist in tracking weekly and monthly report submissions from the Resident Engineers and Construction Inspectors.
- Monitor safety certificate completion for the entire team.
- Assist the Managers of Field Staff in preparing documentation for meetings and taking minutes.
- Participate in a weekly safety inspection "walk-downs."
- Submit support tickets on E-Builder (Project Management Information System) for the team as needed.
- Assist the Resident Engineers and Construction Inspectors on E-builder tasks.
- Track and manage team’s upcoming compliance deadlines.
- Maintain and streamline the Field Staff Management SharePoint sites.
- Lead Daily Transportation Construction Inspector (TCI) intern / co-op stand-up calls and report daily updates to the Manager of Field Staff.
- Create and deliver weekly presentations to the Manager of Field Staff.
- Work cross-functionally with other teams in the Capital Support department to coordinate efforts. The co-op will be working closely with the Construction Quality Assurance and Change Order Teams.
- Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.
- Additional responsibilities may include focusing on one or more departments or locations. See applicable addendums or hiring manager for department or location specific functions.
- Provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experience.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- Enrolled, for entire duration of employment, in an undergraduate / bachelor’s degree program of an accredited college / university with completion of at least one year (minimum of 27 semester credit hours) of college course work as part of one of the following degree programs:
- Associate Degree: Engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, engineering science, surveying technology, drafting / CAD, or heavy equipment operations.
- Bachelor’s Degree: Engineering, engineering technology, environmental sciences / technology, construction management, construction supervision, engineering management, construction engineering / technology, transportation planning, mathematics, physical science, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, surveying, physics, geology, or forestry.
- 0-2 years of experience, including internship / co-op experience.
- Above average proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or database applications.
- Above average quantitative, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Above average ability to communicate effectively in English, both in written and oral forms.
- Highly organized, motivated, and have great attention-to-detail.
- Strong interest in public service, transit, or transportation and how it operates.
- Above average ability to work effectively in diverse, collaborative, fast-paced environments as well as independently.
- Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
- Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply). The MBTA does not provide visa sponsorship, such as H1-B status.

Other Qualifications
- One construction season (minimum of 3 months) of work experience in highway, bridge, or other civil engineering related construction inspection, as described here-in.
