The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for a full-time lecturer position in Chinese language, beginning in Spring 2027. Case Western Reserve University is a nationally top-ranked private research institution located in Cleveland, Ohio.
The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $54,080 to $56,538. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in second language acquisition, Chinese pedagogy, or a related field such as Chinese linguistics and language education, in hand by December, 2026 (PhD preferred). Evidence of teaching excellence and experience, preferably at a North American college or university, and native or native-like Mandarin and English proficiency in both speaking and writing are required. Clear evidence of excellent Mandarin teaching at all levels, familiarity with ACTFL proficiency standards, and implementation of performance-based teaching methods are a must. Additional requirements include the ability to teach both traditional and simplified Chinese characters. The ideal candidate will also display a skilled knowledge of Chinese cultures, traditions, and language uses. The successful candidate will be expected to be collegial in collaboration and use technology to enhance the student learning experience. The individual will also stay actively engaged with cultural events at both the programmatic and departmental levels. The teaching load is three courses (up to three preps) per semester, and service is not required.
Complete application will include a cover letter, CV, contact information of three references, one sample syllabus with a synopsis of session-to-session activities by date, evidence of excellent teaching, a link to a teaching-demo video for an in-person Chinese language class that includes clear teacher–student interaction (at least 30 minutes in duration), and a 5-minute teaching statement video that explains (1) their overall teaching philosophy (English) and (2) ways that their teaching activities have engaged materials from China, Taiwan, and other areas where Mandarin is spoken.
