In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring reliable operation and maintenance of generator systems to support hatchery facilities statewide. 


Envision yourself taking the lead in developing and managing preventive maintenance schedules and preparing detailed reports to keep key personnel informed of equipment status and system performance.


As a technical expert on generator systems, you will also provide guidance on the placement of large-scale generators, recommendations for replacement and designing fuel supply and exhaust systems.


What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Generator Technician will, 


Perform Generator and Compressor Maintenance (Diesel Mechanics): 

  • Respond to emergencies, when fish loss is imminent. 
  • Develop a routine inspection schedule for the generator preventative maintenance program.
  • Perform periodic and emergent diagnostic testing of generators up to 450,000W.
  • Perform risk assessments and make recommendations for replacement or major repairs.
  • Maintain database of hatchery generator equipment including filters, block heaters, oil and coolant and maintain diesel engine monitoring equipment.  
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and un-scheduled repairs of airburst compressors and associated equipment.
  • Play a key role in upgrades, removal and installation of agency emergence generators, airburst compressors and associated equipment.


Project Leadership and Administration:

  • Develop cost estimates for repairs or replacements of parts.
  • Track detailed monthly expenditures including travel, vehicle mileage, purchases in Microsoft Excel. 
  • Monitor incoming work orders pertaining to generator and compressor related needs to develop and implement work schedules.  
  • Prioritize and schedule upcoming work by severity of issue, program priority, and/or geographical location. 


Generator Electrical Preventative Maintenance

  • Independently perform on-site load bank testing generators to verify that all primary components of the generator set are in proper working condition.


Metal Fabrication:

  • Design and fabricate exhaust discharges to accommodate the placement of machines such as fan shrouds, support mounts.

Plumbing:

  • Perform inspection and maintenance on fuel delivery systems (propane and diesel and containment) to assess efficiency and wear. 


Working Conditions: 


Work setting, including hazards: 

  • Duties are performed at construction sites in hatcheries and wildlife areas and on occasion in an office setting. 
  • Work on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.
  • Bend, stoop, squat, twist, push, pull, and lift of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site. 
  • Operate motor vehicles in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads (both paved and unpaved).  
  • This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.


Schedule: Typically, Monday – Thursday, 6:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M., working 40 hours per week. The standard work schedule includes the potential for occasional evening or weekend work as needed.


Travel Requirements: Travel required 60-80% statewide depending on season.


Tools and Equipment: Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, roto hammers, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, chainsaws, powered motors, automotive equipment and trailers


Customer Interactions: Frequent interactions varying between Federal, local, inter-agency, and intra-agency customers and vendors.


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: 


Option 1: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in heavy equipment operation, construction, plumbing, diesel mechanics, or a related trade.
And

Three (3) years of journey-level experience performing construction, maintenance, repair, and heavy equipment operations. 


Option 2: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience performing heavy equipment operation, construction, maintenance, repair, and transportation activities on commercial, industrial, utility, transportation, natural resource, or public works projects.


Option 3: Two (2) years of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic 2.


In addition to the options above, the following experience is required (may be gained concurrently):

  • Lock out/tag out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Generator maintenance and repair.


Certifications/Licenses:

Valid Driver’s License


Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess one or more of the following:


Current certification in welding, electrical maintenance, diesel technology, or a related trade.


Experience: 

  • Developing work schedules, prioritizing maintenance activities, and coordinating projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Preparing cost estimates, tracking expenditures, and utilizing Microsoft Excel or similar software for reporting and recordkeeping.
  • Leading or directing the work of maintenance crews, contractors, or project teams.
  • Supporting fish hatchery operations, water management systems, aquaculture facilities, or other industrial infrastructure.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.

Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness
If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, and meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Holidays 
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

Note: Employees who are members of certain Unions may be entitled to additional personal leave day(s), please refer to position specific Collective Bargaining Agreements for more information.

Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday. 

Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.

Sick Leave 
Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave. 

Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.

Vacation (Annual Leave)
Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in WAC 357-31-165(1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.

Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with WAC 357-31-165(1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.

Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.


As provided in WAC 357-58-175, an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.  

Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.

Military Leave
Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

Bereavement Leave 
Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
