Job Description Summary

The General Biology Grader supports faculty in BIOL 204-01 by assisting with the evaluation and grading of student coursework. 

This position requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to apply grading criteria consistently. The grader plays an important role in supporting student learning by helping provide accurate and timely feedback throughout the semester.

Responsibilities

  • Grade homework assignments, quizzes, exams, laboratory exercises, and other coursework according to instructor-provided rubrics and guidelines.
  • Prepare answer keys and grading materials as directed by the course instructor.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of student grades and coursework.
  • Ensure assigned grading is completed accurately and within established deadlines.
  • Communicate with the instructor regarding grading questions, trends, or discrepancies.
  • Protect the confidentiality of student records and academic information.
  • Attend training and meetings with the instructor as needed.
  • Perform other course-related grading support duties as assigned.

Estimated commitment: Up to 6 hours per week for lecture and laboratory sections combined.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Chapman University student in good academic standing.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records and academic information.
  • Ability to follow instructions and apply grading criteria consistently.
  • Dependable, responsible, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks efficiently.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous coursework in biology, microbiology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Strong academic performance in science-related coursework.
  • Experience providing academic support through tutoring, peer mentoring, supplemental instruction, or similar educational roles.
  • Familiarity with Canvas or other learning management systems.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Interest in biological sciences, teaching, academic support, or student success initiatives.
  • Ability to accurately evaluate coursework and apply grading criteria consistently.

Training will be provided on grading procedures, course expectations, confidentiality requirements, and departmental processes.
